“Game of Life” Card by Lis Whiting

How I arrived at my Chessboard project:
My first thought was of TIME. Time has always fascinated me. I love clocks (I have a lot of clock and clock hands stamps!). Then I started thinking about life and how it is so bound to time. That is how I came up with the chessboard. My life is like a chessboard. Each move I make takes me down a different road, not always present. Then my invisible opponent makes a move that influences my next move and so on. The chessboard is rough which is symbolic of life’s rough edges. I want to create with the time that I have therefore the tile with “create” on it. Life is unexpected and in the middle of it we find the most beautiful things.

Create the Card Base:
Fold a piece of white pearl cardstock (11 x 11) in half to form your card. Cut a piece of blue/gold Stardream cardstock to 5 x 5 for the mat but do NOT attach it yet.

Weave the Card:
Cut eight - ½ x 6 inch strips of cardstock in black and gold glossy. Lay down two strips of removable tape, one perpendicular to the other. This will be used to keep the strips in line while you are weaving.

Start with gold on one side and black on the other. Alternate between the two colors, laying one down and then the next. When you lay them down, weave them over and under the other strips until you have woven all 16 strips. Turn over the woven panel carefully and place two pieces of double stick tape (or regular if you wish) in an “X” across the back. Take off the removable tape. Trim the edges unevenly to create the chessboard. Add some more double stick tape to the back of the panel and attach to the mat. Attach the mat/panel to the card base.

Decorate the game board:
I used a Punch Bunch punch that has all the chessmen. Punch two sets in gold glossy and two sets in white pearl. Attach various chessmen to the chessboard with mounting tape.

Mahjong embellishment: “Create”

Start with an Outlines rubber stamp [Inspiration Series]. Emboss in gold on black cardstock. Cut out two squares. Color with Twinkling H20s and add 2mm acrylic gems in blues and purples. Rubber stamp a Mahjong tiles with the letters CREATE. Stamp a wave decoration below the word and color it with Twinkling H20s. Color the sides of the tile with the same color of Twinkling H20s [Blue Flame]. Attach to the two squares off center and attach this to the card. All are attached with glue dots.
