Pearl Ex Scratch Technique
Magnolia by Linda Strawn

By using an Exacto knife and scratching lines in a stamped image you can add depth and realism to an otherwise flat stamping. The use of pearl ex powders and paints brings this flower to life.

Directions: Using a resin bag on black glossy cardstock, tap powder to cover cardstock, this will keep stray bits of embossing powder from sticking to the glossy cardstock.

1: Stamp Magnolia blossom botanical originally PSX# K-1556 (now available from Inkadinkadoo) onto black glossy cardstock using super emboss embossing ink. Cover with gold fine line embossing powder and emboss.

2: Using an Exacto knife with a sharp blade, scratch across the surface of the flower following the growth lines, never just scratch straight lines make your lines curve, make some small and some long. It is ok to scratch thru some gold embossing as long as you keep the outline of the flower intact. Some paper may come off in little strips this is ok too as long as not much comes off. The idea is just to scratch the surface. See Picture 1
 completed scratch lines.

3: Working with small sections at a time such as 1 leaf, color in section using a very wet brush marker such as a Tombo, LePlume, or brush marker. Dip a small paint brush into pearl ex powder and paint color on, I used an interference green powder on the leaves.

4: Use a blending pen and white pearl ex powder to do the bulk of the magnolia. Finish the flower by adding bits and streaks of pink. Don’t worry about staying in the lines as we will be cutting image out. See Picture 2
for coloring.

5: Use a damp sponge and wipe over image to remove pearl ex paint from embossing lines, when dry spray with a workable fixatiff from Krylon to set paints and powders.

6: Cut out image and matt on a piece of black glossy cardstock. Matt your black glossy on silver metallic and matt silver on a marble red cardstock. Mount red marble onto a silver metallic card.

9: Using dries clear glue from Art Institute Glitter, outline center of flower and add small gold metallic beads. Let dry, and when dry add a paper butterfly charm to top right of card.
