Fan Box by Karen Bourke

This Month's Sponsor:

Take a 5-1/2" diameter cardboard box and paint it with gesso. When thoroughly dry give it two coats of ivory acrylic paint. Use a foiling pen and draw some thin lines to resemble marbling on the base and lid of the box. When the glue is dry apply gold foil and gently rub to transfer the gold to the box.

Take a sheet of decal paper and stamp the main image of the fan (P50 Fan Dance) in olive green StazOn, sprinkle over clear embossing powder and heat set. Repeat this process for two vases, two ewers and four handled goblets. Using a compass cutter (or large circle punch) cut the main fan image into a large circle. Take a piece of fimo clay, knead thoroughly, and roll into a ball. Flatten out to a disc the same size as your main image and heat in the oven for the required time (see manufacturers’ instructions).

Soak the decal sheet with your main image in water until it separates. Paint the clay disc with real turpentine and lay the decal on top. Smooth out to get rid of any creases/air pockets and leave to dry. (See Picture 1)
Repeat this process for the smaller stamped decal images and place around the base of the box. Give the base, lid and clay disc a coat of clear varnish. (See Picture 2)

When the varnish has dried glue gemstones around the clay disc and attach it to the lid of the box with glue. (See Picture 3)

Stamp three vases and three ewers with the olive green StazOn onto friendly plastic. Cut out carefully and punch a hole in either side of each of the images so you can attach jump rings to them later. Using a heat gun shrink the six images. Attach gold jump rings to each of the embellishments and thread chain through them adding a gold bead in between each. (See Picture 4)
Place a small glue dot behind the first embellishment and attach to the side of the lid. Continue with this for all the embellishments making sure they are spaced evenly around the box lid. Attach the two ends of chain behind one of the vases so it cannot be seen. (See Picture 5)
