Butterflies
Cigar Box Purse by Mary Lind
1. Stamp image
(Creative
Chaos Melanie Sage Stamp Line M47 Butterflies) onto white
cardstock using black ink (StazOn). Color image using watercolor
pencils.
2. Spread a layer of Kato Liquid Polymer Clay onto the image you
colored in step 1 as well as several butterflies from the collage
sheet (CSG-11 Bright Butterflies). Liquid clay layer should be thick
enough to cover entire image but not so thick as to puddle in areas or
obscure image.
See tutorial available at
http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/imagetoner.html
3. Bake according to manufacturer’s directions. Allow to cool.
4. Soak paper backing in water for several minutes. Rub wet paper
gently from baked clay. Continue to wet and rub paper off until all
has been removed. Use a glue stick to attach the image transfer to a
sheet of white cardstock. Trim around image. Leave butterflies
unmounted but trim around them.
5. Select a nice cigar box. Trim a sheet of magenta cardstock to a
rectangle smaller than the front of box. Trim a sheet of purple
cardstock approximately 1/4 inch wider around than the magenta
rectangle.
6. Decoupage purple rectangle onto front of cigar box using a thin
layer of Elmer’s glue. Next, decoupage magenta rectangle in center of
purple rectangle. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles in the paper.
Glue image transfer of girl in center of magenta rectangle. Glue
butterflies around girl.
7. Coat entire face of cigar box with a layer of Varathane finish.
Sprinkle on ultrafine glitter. Add a second coat of Varathane. Let dry
thoroughly.
8. Glue on a brass dragonfly using E6000 glue.
9. Drill 2 small holes on top of box, about 1.5 inches from each end
of box and centered depth wise.
10. Using wire cutters, cut an 18 inch long piece of 16 gauge brass
wire. String on approximately 10 inches of large acrylic beads. Pull
each end of wire through a hole in the top of box from outside to
inside. Pull tightly so no bare wire is exposed between beads and bend
wire up at a 90 degree angle to handle
(Figure 1)

11. Inside cigar box, use a pair of round nose pliers to roll the wire
ends into a spiral
(Figure 2)

12. Use Fabri-Tac glue to add fabric trim to front of box if desired.
