‘The Joy of Traveling the Orient’
Shipping Tag featuring a Travel Domino
By
Leigh Snaith-Brunton ~ The Sharpie Domino Queen

All the stamps used in this project are sponsored by

The main theme for this issue of Leigh’s Altered World of Game Pieces is
‘Daydreams of the Orient’.
Dreaming of traveling to the Far East resulted in this shipping tag featuring a Travel Domino.
See finished picture at top.

Start by cutting a large shipping tag shape out of a sheet of light tan cardstock. The cardstock I used has a textured feel with darker flecks in it (Tall Mouse Arts & Crafts). Apply a small amount of Lemon Peel Ancient Page dye ink (www.clearsnap.com) with a stipple brush in a swirling motion around the tag just to add a little more colour. Stamp the ‘Oriental Background ~ 185-001L’ diagonally across the shipping tag in Melon dye ink. Stamping the text 3 times will cover the entire tag. (See Picture 2)

Stamp the word ‘Asia ~ 844-105B’ multiple times down the left hand side of the tag in Chocolate dye ink. Then stamp the Asian characters in faded Cardinal dye ink down the right hand side of the tag. To get the faded look ink up the stamp and stamp it onto a scrap piece of paper first to remove most of the ink. Then stamp the tag. Starting at the top I used ‘Longevity ~ 895-102D’, ‘Happiness ~ 001-006C’, ‘ Friendship ~ 001-003C’ and ‘Joy ~ 895-103A’. (See Picture 3)

Stamp the ‘Flowered Kimono ~ 811-107J’ in Coal Black dye ink onto the same cardstock and cut out leaving a narrow border. Stamp the Asian character ‘Joy’ in Cardinal dye ink onto the kimono. Colour the kimono with Prismacolor coloured pencils. Determine the size of the window cut-out needed by placing the travel domino onto the kimono. Cut out the window with a Xacto knife. (See Picture 4)

Position the kimono on the shipping tag and cut the same size window out of the tag. Stipple Lemon Peel and Mandarin dye ink onto a piece of the same cardstock and stamp ‘Daydreams of the Orient ~ 185-004F’ in Cardinal dye ink and cut out. (See Picture 5)

Edge the tag, kimono, window opening and saying with a broad point metallic gold paint pen (DecoColor). Adhere the kimono then the saying to the tag with double-sided sticky tape. Punch a hole at the top of the tag with a standard sized hole punch and a smaller hole at the top of the window cut out. Add a gold eyelet to the small hole.

Drill a hole all the way through a Travel Domino from the top to the bottom with either a drill press or a Dremel with the domino secured in a vise.

TIP: Mark the hole points on both ends of the domino first. Slowly drill from the top to the center of the domino and then continue from the bottom up until you break through in the middle. This prevents the holes from chipping.

Colour the Travel Domino by dabbing the domino directly onto the Lemon Peel ink pad and blending the ink with a piece of paper towel. Dab Mandarin dye ink onto one side and blend and then just a touch of Chocolate and blend. Heat set the inks with a heat gun. Then ink up the kimono stamp with Coal Black dye ink and press the domino onto the stamp. Lift the domino in an upward motion to prevent smearing the image and heat set. Colour the flowers with a red ultra fine point Sharpie marker. Edge and colour the sides of the domino with the same gold metallic pen. Seal the domino with 2 light mistings of Krylon Artist’s Workable Fixative and then 2 light mistings of matte sealer. (See Picture 6)

Thread a red bead onto a gold head pin then add the domino and another red bead. Bend the end of the head pin into a hook with needle nose pliers and loop it through the eyelet. Bend the hook a bit more to secure in place and trim any excess wire with a pair of wire cutters. Finish off the shipping tag with colour co-ordinated fibers threaded through the top hole.
