The Happy House wall hanging is made from paper-covered fabric that is sturdy enough to be sewn on the sewing machine (see Beryl Taylor’s book Mixed Media Explorations or article in Winter 2004 Cloth Paper Scissors).

  1. Collect coordinating papers (tissue, decorative, paste or wrapping papers) to make the house.

  2. Glue pieces of the decorative papers to muslin or any cotton fabric using PVA glue diluted with water.  Make sure to do this on a large piece of plastic liner.  Apply another layer of diluted glue over the top of the papers. (See Picture 2)

     Let dry overnight.

  3. Cut the main body and roof pieces from the paper fabric and start designing the house.  Cut strips of paper fabric for the house trim, bushes, front sidewalk and door.

  4. Using StazOn black ink, stamp gingerbread house trim using one of the Traditional Borders stamps (www.invokearts.com), and the window and bricks from stamps by Michelle Ward (Physical Graffiti, www.greenpepperpress.com) on the paper fabric and cut out the trim, window and chimney.  Cut the window panes out of the fabric window.

  5. Cut a coordinating piece of fabric paper to show through the window.

  6. Paint the main house paper fabric using Golden’s acrylic glazes (ivory and yellow).  Decorate the main body of the house with a diamonds stamp (by INKADINKADO©) using Gold Opal glaze.  Let the paint dry.

  7. Stamp the letter ‘H’ for happy Dictionary Alphabet stamp (www.LimitedEditionRS.com by Danelle Johnson) onto the house roof.

  8. Hand sew a button doorknob onto the door.  Glue a piece of paper to the inside of the door.

  9. Lay out the house pieces and start sewing the pieces from the bottom up onto a sturdy piece of canvas fabric.

  10. Cut out a tin topiary from a metal container to embellish the front of the house.

  11. Stamp the Welcome dictionary definition (Physical Graffiti by Michelle Ward) onto either side of the window.

  12. Attach a sawtooth hanger to the back of the house. (See Picture 3)
