‘Amulet of the Orient’
by

All the stamps used in this project are sponsored by

Five ivory dominoes are needed to create this amulet necklace. Drill 2 holes all the way through each domino from side to side with either a drill press or a Dremel with the domino secured in a vise.

TIP: Mark the hole points on the domino first. Slowly drill from one side to the center of the domino and then continue from the other side until you break through in the middle. This prevents the edges of the holes from chipping.

Usually when I use my Sharpie Domino Queen technique of colouring with Sharpies I don’t do any surface preparation because the slick shiny surface of the domino is what I need. However, the new dominoes I used this time had a more porous surface and caused the stamped image to bleed. To prevent this from happening I applied a fine coat of Krylon’s Artist’s Workable Fixative to seal the surface of the dominoes.

String all the dominoes together temporarily and then secure them together with a piece of blue painter’s tape/masking tape. Ink up ‘Flowered Kimono ~ 811-107J’ with Coal Black Ancient Page dye ink (www.clearsnap.com) and stamp just the floral section of the image onto the upper portion of the strip of dominoes. Heat set the ink with a heat gun. Mask the stamped area with pieces of blue painter’s tape or fashion a mask with scraps of paper. Ink up the ‘Oriental Lady "Love" ~ 192-001L’ with Coal Black and stamp the remaining portion of the dominoes. Heat set the ink and then remove the mask.

TIP: I prefer to take the dominoes to the stamp instead of the other way around. This helps to control the placing of the image and prevent smudging. Also, lift the dominoes in an upward motion to prevent smearing the image.

Colour the images with Sharpie markers in varying shades of green and yellows with a touch of teal blue and red for the flowers. Add gold detailing to the images with a fine point metallic gold paint pen (DecoColor). (See Picture 2)

The fixative I used to seal the surface of the dominoes causes the Sharpies to get a bit sticky and results in a more textured look to the colouring. But I liked that effect for this project so continued working at it until I was happy with it. When the Sharpie gets too sticky and won’t colour just clean the point on a scrap piece of paper. Remove the painter’s tape and the string holding the dominoes together. Edge and colour the sides of each domino with a broad point metallic gold paint pen. Don’t edge the side of the domino that won’t be seen unless you’d like the overall image to be separated by gold lines! (See Picture 3)

Layout 5 oval mint green cats eye beads, 8 gold spacer beads and 1 jade tear drop accent bead and assemble the amulet using white beading thread. Tie a knot close to the top bead and then pull one end of the excess thread through the top bead and double knot on the other side to secure. Trim the excess thread and hide the knots inside the bead. The strung dominoes will still be flexible at this point. To prevent them from moving put a drop of glue between each domino. Seal all the dominoes with Judikins Diamond Glaze.

Cut a short length of gold beading wire and make a loop with a small gold jump ring attached on one end using a gold crimp bead. (See Picture 4)

Thread the other end of the wire through the top bead and make a jump ring loop on that end too. Cut 2 lengths of gold cording to form the necklace. Secure one end of the cording through a jump ring with a larger gold crimp bead and attach one side of a clasp to the other end with a gold crimp bead. Do the same to the other side.
