For all those travel enthusiast out there…and for everyone else who
can’t resist an altered tin…I designed a really cool ‘traveling tin’
that can be clipped onto your belt, backpack or handbag! The ‘traveling
tin’ is great for storing little cards to make notes of all the great
sites you’ve seen, train tickets, spare change and iPod paraphernalia!

Start this project by altering an Altoid’s tin. First drill a hole in
the base of the tin large enough to screw a clip to the back.

Coat the lid, 2/3’s of the base and the bottom of the tin with Delta
Ceramcoat Metal Primer. Base coat those areas with dark green acrylic
paint and allow to dry. Sponge the same areas with a coat of Lumiere
Metallic Olive acrylic. Colour the upper portion of the base that goes
under the lid and the interior of the tin with Pesto Alcohol Ink by
Ranger. Once everything is dry, edge the lid and half of the sides of
the lid with a broad point metallic gold paint pen (DecoColor) leaving
half of the red colour of the original tin showing. Once everything is
dry, seal everything except for the section that goes under the lid with
one coat of an olive green semi-transparent nail polish with gold dust
suspended in it.

Create a template based on the interior dimensions of the tin and cut
out 5 cards from a sheet of tan coloured cardstock. Stamp the ‘Oriental
Background ~ 185-001L’ on one side of 4 cards in Melon Ancient Page dye
ink (http://www.clearsnap.com) . The effect is subtle and looks like a
watermark on the cards.

Stamp the ‘Oriental Lady "Love" ~ 192-001L’ in Chocolate dye ink and the
character in red Marvy marker on the reverse of the 4 cards and on the 5
card. Colour all the cards with Prismacolor coloured pencils.
(See Picture 5)

Stamp the front of the 4 cards with ‘Travel Tiles ~ 185-005D’ in
Chocolate dye ink. Stamp half of the saying ‘Daydreams of the Orient ~
185-004F’ in Mandarin dye ink on 2 cards and the other half of the
saying on the other 2 cards.
(See Picture 6)

Then stamp a different Asian
character in Cardinal dye ink on the front of each card. I used
‘Longevity ~ 895-102D’, ‘Happiness ~ 001-006C’, ‘ Friendship ~ 001-003C’
and ‘Joy ~ 895-103A’. Edge the front and back of each card with a broad
point metallic gold paint pen.

Stamp ‘Daydreams of the Orient ~ 185-004F’ in Cardinal dye ink twice on
a piece of tan cardstock. Colour 1 with 2 shades of green coloured
pencils. Cut up the saying and edge each piece in metallic gold. Adhere
the saying inside the tin with Aleene’s Fast Grab glue. Also adhere a
magnet to the back of a mini calendar with glue and put the calendar on
the inside of the lid. (TIP: I replaced the white cotton holding the
calendar together with red cotton so it would match my colour scheme).
(See Picture 8)

Cut the 2nd saying and keep only ‘the Orient’ part. Colour with yellow
and peach coloured pencils and edge with metallic gold. Stamp the
‘Travel Tiles ~ 185-005D’ in Chocolate dye ink on another scrap piece of
cardstock and colour with a red coloured pencil and then cut out each
tile. Put aside for now.
From a card I’d made a mistake on I decided to make a ‘train ticket’ for
The Orient Express. Cut out the ticket and stamp ‘the Orient’ in
Cardinal dye ink at the top. Handwrite ‘Express’, ‘Valid Until’ and
‘Adult’ with a fine point permanent marker. Stamp the word ‘Asia ~
844-105B’ in Chocolate at the bottom. Draw 4 squares over the word
‘Asia’ and punch out 4 triangles – to give the impression that the
ticket has been used ;-) Stamp the ‘Oriental Lady "Love" ~ 192-001L’ on
the back of the ticket in Chocolate dye ink and the character in red
Marvy marker. Stamp the date with a date stamp in Coal Black dye ink and
edge the ticket with black ink. To make the ticket look well used,
crease and crinkle it and then rub Sienna dye ink onto it with a piece
of paper towel.

Next, ink up the ‘Oriental Lady’ with Coal Black dye ink and press the
Chekit domino onto the stamp. Lift the Chekit in an upward motion to
prevent smearing the image and heat set. Colour the image with Sharpie
markers and edge the Chekit with a broad point metallic gold paint pen.
Then draw over the Asian character with glossy red 3D Scribbles paint.
Once everything is dry seal the Chekit with a coat of Judikins Diamond
Glaze. Then paint the sides of the Chekit with the same nail polish
mentioned above. Cut a length of traditional Chinese orange fiber (came
with my Mah Jong games) and thread on two black Asian wooden beads (Skybluepink.com),
secure each end with a knot. Loop the fiber around the Chekit and secure
in place with a drop of Diamond Glaze at each corner of the Chekit.
Adhere the following to the lid of the tin with Aleene’s Fast Grab glue;
‘Oriental Lady’ card, ‘Travel Tiles’, ‘the Orient’, the Chekit tile and
an Asian coin. Then add a coat of Judikins Diamond Glaze to the scrabble
tiles for dimension. Once everything is dry attach a red clip to the
back of the tin with a screw and secure on the inside with a bolt.
Finish off the altered tin by dabbing some Pesto Alcohol ink onto the
screw and bolt. Clip the ‘travel tin’ to your belt and you’re ready for
your big adventure…Enjoy!
