Lagniappe ~ Using Acetate

Time Flies by Daylene Strickland

Any stamps will work with this technique, but collage stamps work great. Stamp image (Inkadinkado) on acetate using black StazOn. Trim slightly larger than size for card. Apply Xyron adhesive on reverse side of stamping. Use a craft knife to remove sections of image to apply glitter. For example, uncover only the clocks in this image and cover with light glitter. Next uncover the roses and postal image and cover with red glitter. The butterflies use multiple colors of glitter for blending. When using the craft blade only apply enough pressure to the paper backing of the Xyron to cut it and be careful not to scratch through to the acetate. When finished with glitter, remove remaining paper backing and apply gold foil. Transparent glitter was used for parts of this example so a piece of white cardstock was adhered to the acetate back with Xyron. This ensures the color and brightens it. Trim acetate; deckle scissors were used for side edges. A permanent black pen may be used to edge the acetate; this example uses the Deep Black Galaxy marker.

With a computer print “Time Flies” on a piece of acetate and trim. Stamp watch image (Stampin’ Up) with white ink on purple cardstock. Layer on black card. Edge piece of gold metallic paper with black marker. Add a small piece of red cardstock in the center. Place small piece of acetate with sentiment at the bottom folding one edge underneath the gold paper and taping. Add black mesh securing the other side of small acetate underneath. Layer this panel on card; Add foiled piece to card using dimensional dots. Art Institute fine glitter was used in these colors: Blue Rain (clock); True Red (roses, postal image); Blue Water, Rain Forest, Amethyst, Grape, Royal Wink, Black (Butterflies).

Party Girl on Metallic Acetate by Susan Chong

Cut black cardstock to 8x8 inches, score, and fold in half for an 8x4 base card. Cut acetate piece to approximately 3x6 inches. Cut red and gold glossy cardstock to mat behind the acetate. Cut a piece of red cardstock approximately 3 ½ x ½ inches and a slightly larger piece of gold glossy cardstock to mat behind it.

Stamp “Party Girl” image (Beeswax Rubber Stamps) onto the acetate with Stazon Black ink. Let dry.

Take Metallic Red, Green, Blue, and Silver & Gold acrylic paints and squeeze a small quarter sized dollop of each onto a paper plate or other palette. Using a stippling brush, sponge, or foam paintbrush pounce paints over the entire piece of acetate (on the UNSTAMPED side!) Get good, thick coverage……keep pouncing on colors until you achieve the look you desire. Set aside to dry. This can take 24 hours.

To assemble the card:
Edge all pieces of cardstock with red permanent ink. Allow to dry.

Using the double-sided tape (or adhesive of your choice) assemble all the layers of cardstock and the acetate together and affix to base card.

Glue your brass charms onto the card.

Carefully place your “C H E E R S” letter stickers to the cardstock strip at the bottom of the card. (You may want to place the stickers on first, then glue your charms.)

Acetate Card Design by Nancy Thaut

Cut a sheet of acetate into fourths. Spray one piece with Adirondack Color Wash spray (pesto and cranberry.) Either blot with another sheet of acetate or a tissue. Make sure you don’t spray too hard as it will get runny. If it runs into the other color, it can get muddy. Just a little blending is nice.

On another piece of acetate pour a small amount of Future Floor Finish and spread with your finger. (Using inexpensive latex gloves will prevent ink stains on your fingers.) Then add several drops of Adirondack alcohol ink (lettuce and cranberry) and again spread with your finger. Then add some glitter. Using a piece of tissue paper, (a little larger than the acetate) scrunch into a ball and open but don't smooth it out completely. Press tissue onto the acetate. With an old type paste brush, press the tissue into the acetate. If the tissue doesn’t get completely wet, add a small amount of the floor finish. Set both pieces of acetate aside to dry.

Using StazOn jet black ink, I stamped 3-6 flower stamp images (Rubberstamp Avenue) on the spray wash acetate. The color is not permanent, so the painted side of the acetate should be next to the paper. Then attach three of the flower stamps to a cream piece of paper and add pink and green brads. Set aside.

Trim the acetate and then stamp collage image (Hero Arts) on the right side of the card. Mount onto pale green cardstock. Glue the flower strip to the left side of the card and added embellishments.

Dragonfly Circle Card using the Cold Laminate Acetate Technique by Linda Strawn

This card uses 2 main techniques, making a background paper using Marvy Metallics and cold laminate techniques.

1. To make your metallic background start with a 5-1/2 x 4-1/4 inch piece of black glossy cardstock.

2. Use several colors of Marvy Metallic markers and dot colors down at random; I used gold, teal, pink, blue, and orange.  Spray this mixture with several spritzes of water from a fine mister, The idea is to really mix these to get a semi muddy look, the colors will still sit on top when dry and give this paper a muted metallic look.  You can tilt your paper to mix even more.  Set aside to dry, if you have some come off the edge you can get a wonderful effect by sponging it back on in blank spaces.

3. For cold laminate technique use a small piece of water soluble cold laminate check at office supply and art stores for this acetate.

4. Use a black dye ink pad and stamp your image onto a piece of scrap white paper, I use computer paper.  The image I used for this card is #1711 Dragonfly Circle from Stamp Oasis.  Make sure you have a dark clear image.   I stamp several to fill up my paper but 1 is just fine also.  Mark this with a pencil as being your original.

5. Take this stamping to a toner based copy machine (I use a fax machine) and make a copy.  Save your original as you can use it over and over.

6. Lay your copied stamping face up on the table and peel protective covering off your acetate and lay this on top of image, smooth out all air bubbles, you can use a brayer if desired.

7. Fill a basin with warm to hot water and place acetate image into the  water, let sit for a minute or two and start to rub off the back, you can  rub the paper all off or leave some paper in random places as I did on this  card.  I have found that if you gently roll the paper off with your fingers it works the best. When satisfied with your image set aside to dry.

8. When dry the back will be sticky again, turn image sticky side up and using a stipple brush and Lumiere paint stipple on colors on the sticky side, you can do this at random or try and match the images.  I used colors #562 med olive green, #570 pearl blue, #569 pearl violet, and #552 bright gold.  You can find the paint in your craft and art stores or from US Art Quest.  Let this dry.

9. When dry, mount this image onto your metallic cardstock you made from the first step, mat this onto a piece of silver holographic cardstock, and mount this onto a piece of Bazil paper folded into a card.

10.  To embellish my card I punched out a couple of dragonflies using a dragonfly punch from McGill and used a glue dot to affix them to 2 corners of my card.  I added a gold dream charm, and tied on a silver cord with some purple and white fibers.

WISH I WAS THERE By Rena Sawatski

Print vintage travel advertisement (http://store.doverpublications.com/index.html) on inkjet transparency and set aside to dry.

Cut light navy card stock to size and fold in half, for card base.

On a smaller piece of the same cardstock, swipe two different colors of well inked Orchid Ice and Glacier Blue Opalite inkpads (www.Tsukineko.com) down the panel from top to bottom.

Using Brilliance Starlite Silver inkpad (www.Tsukineko.com), stamp Shipboard Crossing #3010H (http://www.deltacrafts.com) and Eiffel Tower #5242 (http://www.inkadinkado.com) on the panel. Fill in the open areas with various words from the Pixie Expressions Travel Set (http://www.sierra-enterprises.com) with the Brilliance Ink pad. Outline the edges with a silver Krylon leafing pen (http://www.krylon.com). Adhere to the folded cardstock base.

Take a small black matte-board frame and stamp various words from the Pixie Expressions Travel set around the frame with the two different colors of Opalite Pads. Heat set. Tap a clear inkpad over the frame and emboss with two to three layers of clear embossing powder or Ultra Thick Embossing Powder (UTEE).

Place the transparency behind the frame and attach to the stamped panel with double- sided foam tape.

Floral Acetate by Jennifer England

Cut cardstock to desired size (example is 4.25 x 5.5).
Cut acetate down to workable size. (Example is at 4.25x 5.5) set aside.
Cut background paper to same size and determine where you want your "window" to appear so the flower stamp will show thru.
Stamp the background paper with any desired background stamp (TAC) you have on hand. Choose a colored ink (TAC) for better showing up. This will give nice effect.
Take your acetate sheet and stamp image (TAC) over the window area. *Use DYE inks for faster drying! Example is done using India Black ink on acetate.
You can use heat gun to dry faster or leave overnight!
When dry, TURN OVER and color in the image to desired colors. (Example colored with Stampin Up! Pure Color pencils)
Attach the acetate to the card and embellish as desired.

Acetate Happy Birthday Scrapbook Page by Karen Slusher

Stamp “Happy Birthday”, cake and confetti from Confetti and Favors stamp set (CTMH, Close to My Heart) using StazOn black ink onto a 4” x 5” piece of acetate. Flip acetate over and place onto scrap paper or paper towel. Cover back of acetate with Liquid Glass (CTMH) or Diamond Glaze (Judikins). Add a few drops of pink re-inker and swirl into Liquid Glass until evenly distributed. Make sure Liquid Glass covers the acetate completely and to all edges. Sprinkle a bit of ultra fine glitter across wet Liquid Glass. Crumple a piece of white tissue paper (approx. 6”x 6”), then uncrumple it, but don’t flatten completely. Lay the tissue into the Liquid Glass and push only the “valleys” of the crumpled tissue into the Liquid Glass. Do NOT flatten it all the tissue into the Liquid Glass – just poke it in enough to have some of the tissue moistened across the entire piece of acetate. Leave this to dry for a few hours or overnight. When dry, turn acetate over and trim edges as needed. Mount to a slightly larger piece of white cardstock. You will need to use good wet glue or double-stick tape to adhere to the back of the tissue/Liquid Glass. Stamp packages across bottom of 12” x 12” pink paper or cardstock using black dye ink. Then stamp confetti using VersaMark ink all over pink page. Mount acetate square where desired on page and then add your photos and journaling as desired.

Sunflower ATC by Debbie Bankston

Stamp sunflower image (Innovative Stamp Creations) onto acetate using Black Document ink, heat set. Turn the acetate over and work on the back side. Apply a small amount of Ranger Glossy Accents and spread around with your finger. Drop Ranger dye based reinker colors into the Glossy Accents. Smoosh around with your fingers, but don't over mix the colors.

Lay a piece of white tissue paper over this, use your finger to press the tissue into the Glossy Accents. Lay a piece of white cardstock over this and press into place. As the Glossy Accents dries it will act as the adhesive for the cardstock to stay attached to the acetate/tissue layer. When dry, trim to ATC size (2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches.)
