Altered Book Spread with Metal Door by
Kathy Stoffel

1. Select a book to alter and
glue 2 pages together using a UHU glue stick. This will reinforce the page
that will hold the door.
2. Apply gesso to the 2-page spread in front of the glued pages and let it
dry.

3. Select a photo or picture to show behind the metal door.
4. Decide the size and shape of the opening; it should be smaller than the
photo/picture.
5. Select a tag or create a door from cardstock to cover the opening.
6. To create a base for the door, cut out a piece of cardstock larger than
the door.

This spread was painted
and stamped for a layered, textured look, as follows: painted with fluid
acrylics, stamped with brown StazOn ink using an Italian poetry background
stamp from Hero Arts, over-stamped with a foam swirl and hand-carved lips
stamps using acrylic paints, monoprinted with textured paper using acrylic
paint, quinacridone nickel azo gold paint applied and scraped off with a
credit card, black StazOn ink stamped using a floral border stamp from
Anna Griffin (All Night Media® 580H23), and metallic bronze glaze applied
and scraped off.
10. Paint the underside of the door; cover the top of the door with
aluminum muffler tape.
11. Pinch the edges of the door with the grooved teeth from a pair of
pliers to create texture. Stamp alphabet and phrase stamps on the door
front.
12. Apply black ink to the metal to age. Accentuate the letters with
Sharpie marker, Krylon copper leafing pen, and Lumiere metallic olive
paint.
13. Pierce a hole with a hole punch and tie a sheer ribbon.
14. Glue the photo to the page behind the door using regular matte medium
taking care that the picture shows through the opening as expected.

16. Lay the tissue drawing on wax paper. Mix a small amount of
EnviroTex-Lite® resin + hardener according to the manufacturer’s
directions and apply very thinly to the tissue using a credit card. Hang
the tissue to dry overnight using a black clip suspended on a wire hanger.
Please note ventilation and other safety precautions.
17. Decide on placement of the drawing and hole punch through both the
drawing and page and attach the drawing with a silver-toned brad. Glue the
previous page to the back to cover the brads.
