Rubber Stamping Techniques
Grid Technique

Grid Technique:  Use copy paper (thinner the better); sticky notes, or Eclipse Tape as to mask off sections of cardstock.  Choose 2-3 complimentary ink colors.  Apply one color of ink at a time starting with lightest color first to form grid lines.   Put the sponge on the mask first and pull or drag the color onto the cardstock to avoid harsh areas of ink application. (See Step One)

Arrange the mask as desired on cardstock for grid formation.  Always work in the same direction pulling the sponge and ink for all of your lines.  Stamping one image first then forming the grid around may be done or the grid may be formed alone and all images stamped afterward.   After lines are formed, if desired more color may be added by dabbing inked sponges or continuing to pull color outward in grid areas. (See Step Two and Three)

Once lines are formed and desired coloring is complete, fill in the grid by masking and stamping images.

Tips:

  • Do not use the sticky notes as masks for stamping images between sections or halos will form.  Best to use thinner paper or Eclipse Tape.

  • Change paper/mask between color applications for grid to prevent ink bleeding through to cardstock.

  • Cosmetic wedges may be trimmed and uppermost tip to round off edge for ink application.  This allows for holding the sponge by two edges between fingertips in a curled up fashion and dabbing the ink on so as not to leave lines.  Secondly, the sponges retain two pointed sides for applying ink in small areas or more directly if desired.

  • Mixing bold and detail images and using the lighter colors of the grid lines as well as bolder ink colors adds interest to the piece.

Card Directions:

Follow the directions for the grid technique. High glossy white cardstock was used for best results in blending dye ink. The scan doesn’t show all of the lighter ink stamped images in the background; there are green and light blue images in some of the grid panels. Each panel has (remove “a”) detail and bold images in it. The center is left white with the images stamped as a spotlight. The grid is outlined with Adirondack Denim marker. The embellishment is a bingo marker with a flower clippie adhered with Crystal Lacquer and a little glitter. Adirondack ink pads: Stonewash, Meadow & Denim. Stamps used: Butterfly (Penny Black); Gone to Seed-Dandelion (Hampton Arts); Flower Sprig & Daisy (Rubber Stampede/Delta); Script & Floral Script (Hero Arts); Bubbles Background (Judikins); Sentiment (Wordsworth).
