Image Transferring and Creating Rubberstamps by Steph Schirmer

As artists, we are always looking for ways to enhance our work.  Many of us turn to creating our own images, creating embellishments and even looking for new ways to add something to existing images.  This month’s column is about this, enhancing our own art by doing different things.  We will explore several different transfer techniques as well as creating your own rubberstamp.

Let’s start with image transferring.  There are several different transfers out there from Gin transfers, packing tape, gel medium, Omni gel and caulk.

  1. Gin transfer on clay is taking photo’s and Gin and putting them onto raw clay: http://www.bearingbeads.com

  1. Omni~Gel transfer using this gel to transfer onto glass, metal, fabric, leather or canvas using magazines, clip art, newspaper or books: http://www.bearingbeads.com

  1. For gel medium transfers check out this website using Golden soft Medium Gel and a great project using sandwich wrap: http://www.dotcalmvillage.net/nowwhatzine6/djfamilytransfer1.html

  1. Another great site for Gel Medium transfers and examples is: http://www.artchixstudio.com/create/classroom/class_transfers.htm

  1. Yet another great site with a great write up and examples is: http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/bobbi.html

  1. Here is a site for transferring onto clay using black and white photo’s: http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/MainPages/transfers.htm#copier

  1. Check out the Inkjet waterslide decals sold at Lisa Pavelka’s site: http://www.coveredinclay.com/

  1. T-shirt transfers are good for polymer clay go to: http://www.glassattic.com/

  1. Use Liquid polymer clay as a medium.  Mary Lind uses her inkjet printouts (which don't transfer well), but she re-colors the image with watercolor pencils (which do transfer). Her favorite liquid polymer clays are Fimo Gel followed by Kato brand. TLS (Sculpey) is translucent, not transparent. Clay transfers can be encased in translucent polymer clay for a completely different effect

  2. Caulk transfers check out this site:

Packing tape transfers is a very common transfer but worth mentioning: http://www.layersuponlayers.com/contact-paper-transfers/

Another way of producing your artwork is done by carving your image into a carving block, by using stamp-carving tools, which creates some beautiful pieces of work. Check out these websites for instructions and examples:

There are a lot of things in this column, I had forgotten about, but in looking for items for it, I rediscovered them.  I hope you find something inspirational.  I want to thank the design teams members for their help and guidance with this column, I can’t do it by myself and they provide some great inspiration.  I am also not affiliated with any of these sites I am just sharing things found.

At the end are a few photos from the design team of different techniques I thought you would enjoy seeing.

Happy Creating
