Out of the Box Cards Team

Theme: Using Bindings on Cards

"Favorite Project"

A Door to China Hinge Card by Lis Whiting

1. Fold a piece of red cardstock 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches  in half to create your card base. Measure 1/2 inch in from fold and score the front of the card only from top to bottom.

2. Rubber stamp a Chinese emblem [Onyx Expressions] in black [Marvey] on the front of the card
     a. To the right of the score stamp an alternating pattern (see picture of card)
     b. To the left of the score to the card fold, overlapping the top portion of the pattern only.

3. Edge the card with the black ink pad [Marvey] on all four sides of the front of the card.

4. Cut out two hinges using Accucut Hinge Die: one in copper [Stardream Cardstock, The Paper Cut] and one in pewter glossy [The Paper Cut] Attach oxidized brass eyelets to the hinges where the holes are in both hinges.

5. Cut a length of green leaf ribbon [Mays Arts] about 8-9 inches long.

6. Starting at the bottom, take your first hinge and place mini glue dots on the back of it.

7. Take one end of the leaf ribbon and push the “stem” a little bit into the bottom eyelet hole. (See Picture 2)
There should be a glue dot on the back of the hinge that will hold it in place. (You want it to look as though a vine is growing out of the eyelet hole.)

8. Attach the lower hinge in place, noting the following:
     a. The end of the hinge should line up with the card fold on the left. (See Picture 2)

     b. The score where the hinge will bend should line up with the score that you made on the card.
     c. The hinge should be placed about 3/4 inches from the bottom edge of the card.

9. Attach your second hinge (place glue dots on the back of it as you did with the first hinge), starting with the left side of the hinge only, noting the following:
     a. The second hinge should be about ¾ inches from the top of the card.
     b. The end of the hinge should line up with the fold of the card. (See Picture 3)

     c. The score of the hinge should line up with the score that you made in the card.

10. Hold the right side of the hinge with one hand so that it is not touching the card. Take the leaf ribbon (being careful not to pull it out of the bottom hinge) and wrap it around the top hinge. (See Picture 3)
 and (See Picture 4)
Wrap the ribbon loosely. While wrapping the ribbon, lay down the hinge to hold it in place.

11. Take mini glue dots and place a glue dot behind a leaf here and there so that the vine will stay in place. Don’t glue dot all the leaves as you want them to stick up to create a three dimensional effect. The end of the vine starts to climb or “grow” up to the top of the card. Place a final glue dot on the last leaf to secure it to the card.

Art Grid Card by Linda Strawn

1. Cut 2 pieces of white cardstock 6 x 4 ¼"

2. Using butterscotch, terracotta, and raisin Adirondack inks from Ranger follow the directions for making a grid card. (You can find the directions in the archives of Stampers Mall.

3. Lay your 2 pieces down, matching edges. Cut a piece of brown packaging tape 4 ½" in length (I cut a bit longer so I can cut off extra this makes a better edge fit).

4. Fold tape in half lengthwise and moisten with a damp sponge. Line up cardstock edges and lay tape along the short edge and press down on one side to adhere smooth out other side and adhere. See finished card.

5. Using Raisin ink stamp sun face dial from Stamp in the Hand on the right top corner going off the page a bit. Also on the bottom right corner stamp hand crafted book. And postmark artist stamp overlapping sun dial, see finished card.

6. Using bottle green from Adirondack stamp dream from Art Impressions across the top left starting on the tape. Stamp maple leaf from Magenta, and ink quill on the bottom left corner.

7. To finish your card off and embellish use a hole punch and punch holes through all layers ½" from the top and bottom edges, see finished card.

8. Cut a 1 yard piece of hemp twine and thread it thru going back and forth and tie into a knot.

9. Use raisin ink and color 3 scrabble tiles to spell the word ART and glue this down as shown in finished card.
Stars and Stripes by Viki Banaszak

Punch star and stripes onto yellow cardstock 5 times just overlapping the outer stripe. It will be easiest to do if you turn the punch over and punch from the bottom. (See Picture 1)

Weave a strip of navy blue ribbon through the length of the punched area as shown. (See Picture 2)

Layer the punched cardstock onto a red card. Add punched stars in light and dark blue and use the tiny yellow stars from the star and stripe as an accent. Stamp Happy 4th of July in navy ink.
Hinge Card by Heather Taylor

1. Make a couple of hinges out of cardboard by cutting 1/4" strips, then drawing a little design on the end which you cut out with an Xacto knife. Glue two slightly thinner strips of Tyvek (R) material onto the ends, then color with gold & copper Ranger alcohol inks. (See Picture 1)

2. Color a piece of ridged handmade paper with Ranger alcohol inks (Caramel, Terra Cotta, Copper, & Gold), then trim to a 4x4" square. Edge with a Gold Krylon, then mount onto a barely-larger piece of gold metallic cardstock.

3. Hand-place the hinges over the front panel, then cut diagonal slits (2 per hinge) where you want your brads to be. Insert the brads through all layers. (See Picture 2)

4. On another piece of pearlized cardstock covered with the same alcohol inks, stamp inside panel image (Art Neko) with black Versacraft ink, then emboss in clear. Edge this with the Krylon gold pen, heat set, then mount to black glossy cardstock cut 10"x5" and folded in half.

5. Cut two slits where the Tyvek (R) should meet the edge of the mounted inside panel image. Push the Tyvek (R) strips through--I used the blunt eye of a large embroidery needle. (See Picture 3)

6. Glue the Tyvek (R) hinges on the inside front of the card. When you open up the panel, you can see the hinges, so you might want to color them black before you do all this. (See Picture Inside)

7. Stamp the saying (Art Neko) on the same metallic gold cardstock and edge with another piece of glossy black cardstock. Mount on the front panel. Enjoy!
