Welcome to our newest section! Every month you will find cards that take a little bit more time and are a little more "out of the box" than your usual cards. We hope you enjoy this new section.

Indian Elephant by Karen Bourke

Take an A5 piece of black cardstock and spray it (carefully!) with Krylon gold webbing and set it aside. Take a piece of tan coloured cardstock 2 1/4" by 5 3/4" and stamp the Indian Elephant image (The English Stamp Company) using a Ginger Adirondack stamp pad.  Next take your black elephant peel off and place it on a piece of double sided sticky paper cut to size with the top protective layer removed.  Then place the peel off into the container of abalone leaf (or if you don't have this use gold leaf); when the image is covered with the abalone leaf take it out and rub the image with your fingers.  When most of the loose leaf has been removed use a scrubbing pad to polish the image and remove any residue.

Cut a mat of gold embossed cardstock to size for both the Indian Elephant image and the peel off image and mat them up (remove the back protective layer from the peel off image first) and then mat them up again onto a black/gold animal print paper.  Stick the Indian Elephant image centrally on the main card and then attach the peel off image on top.  Finish off by tying a gold tassel around the top of the card and attach elephant embellishment. Don’t forget to edge the card with a gold Krylon pen to finish. Click here for a larger view of this card.

Jungle Fever by Viki Banaszak

Stamp giraffe (Taylored Artwork) with Palette Noir black ink, twice on an off-white cardstock. Color one image in with watercolor pencils, using a water brush to spread the color.  On the second image, color only the giraffe and the frame points.

Cut out the first image close to the edges and mount on black cardstock. Cut out the giraffe and the points of the second image. Attach the points to the area between the points on the first image. Trim the black cardstock about 1/8 inch from the edges with a scissors.

Use a dab of Diamond Glaze- Judi-Kins on the eye of the giraffe to make it shiny. Set aside to dry.

Attach the whole piece to a folded 8.5 x11 card stock, making the center point about 1/4 inch from the fold. Using a ruler, measure 1/4 inch from each point. Draw a line from each spot that you marked. Leave 2 inches on the folded side of the card. Cut on your lines.

Use Stickles glitter glue in a variety of colors to embellish the blank spaces of the card. After the glue has dried, attach the giraffe to the center of the image using pop dots.

Asian Rolled Frame Mountain Hare Card by Lis Whiting

This card has a wonderful technique using wooden sticks and yuzen washi paper to make a frame.

First, prepare your frame. The size of the frame depends on what you will be framing so you need to measure your image carefully to determine the dimensions. Once measured, take wooden sticks (the ones used here are from the grocery store and are used for shish kabobs). Take a pencil and mark where you will need to cut the sticks. Using a wire cutter, cut the sticks to length. You will need 6 short and 6 longer ones for the frame. Smooth any splinters with sandpaper and scissors. Cut yuzen washi paper to the length of the sticks and about 1 inch wide. Using glue [Aleene’s Thick Designer Tacky Glue], spread glue on the paper. Place the stick at one end and with your fingers on the edge of the paper; roll the paper around the stick. This may take a little practice at first so you may want to try it with plain paper.

Prepare your card:
A moss green linen patterned cardstock [Bazzill] was cut and folded to create a 5 x 7 card. Gold/purple cardstock [Stardream from the Paper Cut] was stamped with gold Brilliance [Tsukineko] using various Asian images. The corners were punched with a southwestern design that created notches. The cardstock was then edged in gold pen [Pilot Gold]. This was attached to the card base.
Prepare your image:
The Mountain Hare Stamp was stamped in black Brilliance [Tsukeniko] on plain yellow cardstock. The image was painted using Twinkling H2Os. (The Hare was painted using interference blue.) The image is mounted onto the card.

Forming Your Frame:
Take three yuzen washi paper sticks of the same length and glue them together [Aleene’s Thick Designer Tacky Glue]. Place each set of three sticks onto the card to create your frame. Then take up each side and add glue. Glue frame to card.

Final Touches:
As a final touch, I used New Smoking Yarn [Filatura di Crocha] in green, wrapping it around one set of sticks before gluing. Allow enough length to hang down side of card. Tie a knot in each end and create a mini faux tassel. Glue a Chinese coin at the top corner.
