New
Year’s Resolutions Box by
Stephanie Loomis
Resolutions signify a commitment to a new beginning with some activity.
Many revolve around eating and exercise habits. Others concern new hobbies
to try, fears to overcome, and time management. One resolution that is
often overlooked is the dedication to keeping in touch with all the people
on the Christmas card list. This project is designed to inspire short
little notes throughout the year—just because.
1. Remove the hardware from a wooden box purse (Plaid.)
2. Paint the box with Cinnamon Apple acrylic paint (Plaid)
3. Collect at least three patterns of coordinating paper (this project
uses “Vintage Holiday” from The Angel Company.)
4. Measure box lid, inside lid, and inside bottom. Cut paper to fit
measurements and glue to box lid, inside lid, and inside bottom with Mod
Podge (Plaid) or other decoupage medium.
5. While decoupage dries, stamp letters to spell desired name on miniature
dominoes (This project used “Distressed Bet” from The Angel Company.) Use
Olive Green Staz-On ink (Tsukineko)
6. Stamp sentiment with Olive StazOn ink onto Mah Jong tile. (TAC)
7. Add a contrasting strip of paper to the box lid and arrange letters.
Attach with craft glue.
8. Add a contrasting strip of paper to the inside of the box lid. Glue the
stamped Mah Jong tile to a coordinating silk flower (Prima) and glue to
the inside lid as shown.
9. Spray the box exterior with a high gloss acrylic sealer (Krylon) and
let dry.
10. Create a set of 4" square note cards using the same papers as the box.
Use vellum quotes, linen sticker quotes, stamps, and/or computer generated
text to make each card unique. Embellish with fiber, buttons, charms,
and/or tags.
11. Tape a strip of paper around the barrel of a pen. Wrap a 3/4" x 6"
strip of O'So sticky tape (Penny Wise Arts) around the paper. Peel off red
liner and roll pen in clear microbeads (PWA.)
12. Re-assemble box, fill with note cards, beaded pen, and a treat. Begin
the New Year with a renewed dedication to the lost art of letter writing.
