Faux Postage Pendant by Mary Lind

1. Make a color copy (mirror setting) of a cancelled international postage stamp of your choice onto Lazertran waterslide decal paper. Cut out image. Condition a small ball of pearl white polymer clay in the pasta machine and roll out on third thickest setting. Place waterslide decal picture side down on clay. Burnish well with finger and moisten with water. Peel paper backing off image on clay. Trim image using Judikins detail scissors.

2. Roll out black polymer clay on thickest setting. Place black clay on a texture sheet and use brayer to pick up texture onto clay. Apply bronze Pearl Ex pigment with a finger, using light strokes. Use tissue blade to trim a rectangle approximately 1/8 inch larger than stamp image. Center stamp image in rectangle of textured bronzed clay.

3. Create a black and white striped cane. Roll out small pieces of black and white clay on the thickest setting of the pasta machine. Cut out small rectangles of clay, making a stack of alternating black and white pieces. Cut the striped cane crosswise with a tissue blade, and further trim into 1/8 inch thick slices. Arrange striped clay pieces around outside of textured clay to make a frame. Use a needle tool to create a center hole at top of pendant.

4. Apply a very thin layer of liquid polymer clay to surface of pendant and bake according to manufacturer’s directions (approximately 20 minutes at 265 degrees F).

5. Rubber stamp with Black StazOn using mini postal cancellation stamp (Limited Edition Art Stamps). Heat set ink. Seal pendant using Future Floor Finish.

Notes: This project was inspired by a class with Lisa Pavelka. I purchased my cancelled international stamps on EBay and made my own copies onto Lazertran sheets, but waterslide decal sheets pre-printed with postal stamp images are available at Lisa’s website (www.coveredinclay.com).
