Garden Path – Altered Book Spread by Kathy Stoffel

Click here for a larger view of these pictures

1. Select a book to alter; for this spread you will need 5 sequential pages.

2. Print a favorite garden picture on the rough side of an inkjet transparency.

3. Cut the transparency to approximately 3-1/2 inches square.

4. Using scissors, cut two slits 1 to 1-1/2 inches apart in the middle 2 pages of your book and tear out the gap…this will leave two segments, one large enough to hold the transparency and a smaller one.

5. Cut an opening in the larger segment that will act as a frame to the transparency allowing at least 1/2-inch all around.

6. Color the outside of the frame and smaller segment using StazOn olive green ink applied directly to the paper and Golden’s glazes (hunter green and taupe). Use textured paper to mono print a metallic texture on the outside of the frame with Golden’s metallic bronze glaze. Add color to the inside and outside edges of the segments so they don’t show up white.

7. Glue the transparency into the frame using gel medium, glue stick or double-sided tape.

8. Glue the bottom segment together.

9. Add color to the outer pages using light colors to contrast with the transparency (Cat’s Eye canary, and Versa Color marigold and bamboo inks).

10. Stamp a floral edge stamp along the bottom segment (Anna Griffin’s from All Night Media, 580H23).

11. Create a flap using a picture printed onto mulberry paper and glazed with resin (or use another transparency).

12. Attach the flap by gluing the picture’s edge to a 1-inch wide piece of lace or ribbon and glue the other side of the ribbon to the back of the page. Cover this with the preceding page by gluing the pages together.

13. Select a few stamps to go with your garden scene and stamp under the flap (Small Bloom 2281 by Hampton Art Stamps), above the flap (dragonfly by Stampin’ Up), between the two page segments (Small Bloom) and under the bottom segment (acorns by Stampin’ Up).

14. Brush on a layer of Golden’s glaze (gold opal) over the stamped images to soften.
