Her Majesty in White: Snow Queen Christmas Ornament by Lis Whiting

Hans Christian Anderson wrote “The Snow Queen” which is the story of love and faith. The Snow Queen rules over all that is ice and snow and winter. This ornament is dedicated to love, which melted the Snow Queen’s heart of ice.

The Skirt:
The skirt is made of white tulle. Take a length of tulle 5-1/2" x 24". Fold the tulle in half and in half again. Fold this piece accordion style lengthwise. Fold this thin lengthwise piece in half. Spread the tulle for the skirt. Use a clip to hold the fold. Use a colored brad (see below for the instructions to color the brads) to hold the two halves together at the base.

Decorating the Skirt:
Take about 8-10 small round brads, three large round brads, two small metal tags and a keyhole and lock. You will also need the following embossing powders: Interference silver, blue & violet; Aegean silver & pale gold. The original color of the brads does not matter. We are going to color change them with embossing powder.

Use a roach clip to hold a brad by its fasteners. Open your embossing powder jar. Heat the top of the brad with a heat gun for about 2-3 seconds for small and 5-6 seconds for large brad. Dip the top of the brad into the embossing powder. Tap off any excess carefully. Heat the brad FROM THE BACK. Watch carefully as the embossing powder melts quickly. The reason you want to heat form the back is so that you don’t blow the embossing powder all over the place. We do not use any embossing liquid or VersaMark to do this. The hot brad top adheres the embossing powder to the top.

Create different colors of brads. Use the same technique for the keyhole and lock & the metal tags (which should be THIN metal. Karen Foster makes these as brads also which is what I used). Cut the fasteners from the backs of the finished brads with wire cutters. Make sure they are flat. Take a silver Krylon pen and line the edges of the tags.

Adhere all decorations to the skirt with Aleene’s Thick Designer Tacky glue. Take Stickles Crystal glitter glue and fill in the space with dots of glitter glue. Spread either SOBO or Elmer’s on the bottom edge of the skirt and then dip into either crystal or silver glitter or crushed cellophane. Set aside to dry for about 4 hours.

The Dominos:
There are two dominos in this piece.
The first is a white rectangular domino. Cover this domino with Sepia Accents [Inkssentials by Ranger) and spread with finger. Add a dictionary page containing the definition of WINTER. Cover this with more Sepia Accents and spread with finger again. Stamp with a small snowflake [Serendipity Stamps] in silver brilliance [Tsukineko]. Add a few acrylic jewels (3mm) in crystal. Edge the domino with a silver Krylon pen.
The second domino is the Snow Queen’s face. Take a triomino (from the deluxe edition-no hollow backside). Stamp the face [Stamper’s Anonymous]. Add crystal acrylic jewels (3mm) and green acrylic marquise jewels to create her hairpiece. Edge the domino with a silver Krylon pen.

The Bodice:
The bodice of the dress is made of wrapped wire. Take a bust and wrap forest green, dark purple and silver wire (22-24 gauge) around it to make the form. Remove the wire. Use gold or yellow wire to wrap the four parts. Let one part spread (as though her gown is falling off one shoulder).

Putting it All Together:
Everything is attached to the bodice with wire. Take silver wire and draw it through the bodice and the skirt on the left and right. Fasten in back to secure. Take the rectangular domino and mount it at the waist using wire and fastening at the back. Attach the triomino to a large white snowflake using E 6000 AFTER you build up about 8-10 layers of mounting tape. You don’t want the face to sit flat against the snowflake. Let dry before proceeding. Attach the snowflake and triomino to the bodice from the back using wire.
