Eggshell Tiles by Daylene
Strickland
Step 1
Soak eggshells in solution of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water. Soak for 1/2
hour. Remove any membranes on inside of shells. After this has been done,
eggshells will keep for a LONG time. Crush the shells with back of a spoon
up against the side of container or bowl.
Step 2
Choose a shape for the tile and trim it from chip board or the backing
from notepads, etc. (Something sturdy). The 8-star shape used in these
examples was traced from a template. The other is a basic rectangle; both
are trimmed from chip board.
Step 3
Cover chipboard piece with double-sided adhesive that can withstand
heating (embossing). Remove protective backing and sprinkle eggshells over
each piece. Using metal spoon, firmly press and further crush eggshells
into the chip board piece.
(See Picture 1)

Step 4
Using fingers, apply a variety of coordinating acrylic metallic paints to
each piece. The 8-star shape uses Folk Art metallic Inca Gold, Pure Gold,
Solid Bronze, and Copper. The rectangle uses Lumiere Halo Pink Gold, Blue
Gold, Pearl Emerald, and Pearl Violet.
(See Picture 2)

Step 5
Two possibilities at this point: Add clear UTEE while paint is wet and the
paint will bubble up and yield a more textured “rocky” look. The rectangle
shape piece has 3 coats of UTEE added while the paint was wet.
Second choice: Allow the paint to completely dry and add clear UTEE one
step at a time with VersaMark as sticking agent between coats. The 8-star
shape has 8 coats of UTEE applied for a smooth, glassy look with more of
the individual pieces of colored eggshell showing.

Cards:
8-Star piece has micro beads and charm added by slightly heating the piece
and dropping these on. Cording was attached to the piece; then mounted
with foam dots to a stamped background (map from Sunday International) and
layered on coordinating cardstock.
Rectangle shape wrapped with wire, beads and charm, then layered on
background (by Judikins) and black card.
