Non-Traditional Stamping by Steph Schirmer

When you think of rubber stamping, you think of using stamps to create your image or background. This month’s question was going outside the box and using ordinary things around the house to stamp with. We sometimes can’t come up with the right stamp, or a background needs something, these suggestions might help in that department. The key is to look around, see what is there for you to use and experiment.

Here is a list of suggestions:

Bubble wrap
Wooden skewers
Sponges
Pencil erasers
Saran wrap
Wax paper
A Hand
Wadded up paper
Carpet pieces
Wire mesh
Cling film (what it is called in the UK)
Foam shelf liner with a grid pattern
Filigree to stamp polymer clay
Buttons
Wine corks
Ear of corn
Celery
Bottom of an old shoe
Leaves
Whisk broom
Aluminum foil
Potato

Here are some suggestions using some of the items listed above:

The potato was used to make a checkerboard background, cut the potato to a square form and use acrylic paint.

The ear of corn was used by Martha Stewart, she inked the corn and rolled it across a piece of paper, making a cool background. She also took an oval piece of paper put it down on the cardstock and rolled the inked corn over it, lifting the paper up and having a spot to journal.

Cling film is used by inking a brayer and rolling over glossy cardstock, mist with water until ink starts to run, cover with cling film and then scrunch it up, wait till ink dries and remove film – super effect.

Wadding up wax paper, saran wrap and a piece of paper all give background texture.

Take a bunch of celery, leave it bunched together and cut evenly across the bottom, if you ink the end and stamp it looks like a rose.

Take several pencils and rubber band together, ink the eraser end and stamp across paper.

These are just a few examples, use your imagination and see what you can come up with in your house.

I want to thank everyone for helping create this column, I couldn’t have done this without you.
