'Asian Amulet - Checkers Necklace' by Leigh Snaith-Brunton
The Sharpie Domino Queen

Directions:
Start this project by drilling holes into the wooden checkers.
Drill 3 holes into each piece at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions.

SAFETY TIP:
Make sure you put the checkers into a clamp to hold them sturdy while drilling and where safety glasses!

Screw the eye screws into the 6 drilled holes. Secure with a dab of glue if the holes are a bit too big. Position the two outer and bottom eye screws so that the holes face forward and the middle eye screws side ways. Glue an Asian coin to each checker. Once set, glue the amber jewels to the center of the coins.

Cut a length of gold wire and form an eye loop at one end. Form a loop with needle nose pliers and wrap the short end of the wire around the stem (the longest part of the wire) 2 - 3 times just below the loop. Thread 13 Asian beads onto the wire then bend the wire to form a wide upside down 'V'. Secure the other end with another eye loop.

Next make 4 bead dangles. Cut 4 short pieces of gold wire. Form an eye loop at one end of each piece of wire. Before closing the loop on two of the wires first attach a fan charm.

Make two dangles by threading a seed bead and an Asian bead and finishing with another eye loop. Make two more dangles with the wires that have the fans attached by threading an Asian bead onto them.
Finish with another eye loop. But before closing the loop attach them to the eye screws at the 6 o'clock position on the checkers.

Now to assemble the Amulet's components. First attach the two checkers together with a large jump ring. Open the jump ring and thread a seed bead, a large dragonfly charm and another seed bead, then loop the eye screws onto each end of the jump ring and close it.

Secure the beaded 'V' and the two beaded dangles to the outside eye screws with two medium jump rings. Open a jump ring and loop a dangle, the beaded 'V' and the eye screw of one checker onto the jump ring and close it. Do the same to the other side. Attach two small dragonfly charms to the beaded dangles with small jump rings.

To create the necklace thread a length of chenille fiber through the bead at the bend of the 'V'. Thread an Asian bead onto each end of the fiber and secure the ends with 2 - 3 knots.

DIRECTIONS:
1. Punch 3 1” circles from ivory cardstock.
2. Punch eyelet size hole near top of each circle.
3. Stamp each circle with a different floral image in a different color.
4. Cover each circle with UTEE (ultra thick embossing enamel or powder) & emboss. Repeat 2 more layers.
5. Drill each checker near top edge with dremmel tool.
6. Adhere one UTEE (ultra thick embossing enamel or powder) circle to the center of each of the checkers using a large glue dot. You will need to be sure you line up the holes.
7. Open each Jump ring and slide checker on and close ring.
8. Cut piece of memory wire 2” larger than the size of your neck.
9. Bead one tan bead onto wire, then string one of your checkers on, then one bead.
10. Going left add about 1inch of alternating beads then add another checker.
11. Going right now, add about one inch of beads, then add your final checker.
12. Bead the rest of the wire going left to right so beads are even on each side and there is ½ inch left of wire on each side.
13. Use needle nose pliers to bend each side of the ends of the memory wire back and squeeze tightly.

'Asian Checker Pendant' - by Missy Wong

 Tools:

Drill, hand drill or Dremel (I use a small hand drill by Fiskars)
1 inch circle punch
A pair of Sharp Scissors
Thread Clippers (optional)

Directions:
1. Drill a hole through the ridged wall of the checker. Remember the hole needs to come out on the concave side with the star. (The crown side will be the back of your pendant.)

2. Thread the  linen thread through a bead, take both ends of the thread and push it though the drilled hole. The bead will be sitting over the hole you drilled into the checker.

3. Punch out a circle of the Asian Ephemera. (Remember to not cover the hole you have drilled!) Use just a few dots of Diamond Glaze to position and hold your circle in to the convex surface. You will need to gently put it around to not get any wrinkles or bends in the paper.

4. Use Diamond Glaze to tack down the small coin and tiny tile into places you wish. Once you know your items will not move fill the surface with more Diamond Glaze. (Do not fill higher then the ridge wall of the checker.) Let it sit for 12 - 24 hours to dry.

5. After pendant has set thread both ends through another bead. Thread a seed bead on each end of the thread.

6. Using a square knot, tie off the ends to the length you wish with the charm tied into the knot.

7. Slide the seed beads over the ends of your thread to seat them next to your knot. Drab a bead of clear nail polish on to your knot.

8. If desired, once the polish is dried, use thread clippers to clip the loose ends flush with your seed bead.
