"London Baby, Yeah!" Domino & Guitar Pick Necklace by Leigh Snaith-Brunton - The Sharpie Domino Queen, Design Team Leader

Sponsored by:

Having just returned from my UK vacation I was inspired to create a London themed necklace. The necklace features dominoes and the star embellishment of the August issue of Leigh's Altered World of Game Pieces which is altered guitar picks!

For this necklace you need small and medium sized dominoes and a real guitar pick (Craftings And Things). Drill holes through both dominoes from top to bottom.  Mark the hole locations on each domino first and then secure them in a vice.  Drill each hole carefully and slowly, first from one end and then from the other end until you break through in the middle of the domino.  Tip:  Make sure you wear protective eye goggles and a dust mask at all times when drilling! Soak the guitar pick in hot water to help soften the plastic and then punch out 2 holes with a tiny hole punch.  Tip:  Soaking the plastic first prevents the pick from cracking.

Ink up the London faux postage stamp (http://www.heroarts.com) using coal black Ancient Page dye ink (http://www.clearsnap.com) and Marvy Markers (http://www.uchida.com/).  Do all the inking directly onto the rubber stamp. Carefully dab the black dye ink onto the buildings and then use the red and blue Marvy Markers for the Union Jack flag.  I recommend that you practice this technique a few times on paper first to get the hang of it.  Breathe onto the stamp to refresh the ink because the inking up might take a while. Take the small domino and press it directly onto the rubber stamp instead of the other way round.  This way you've got more control over where the image will be.  Re-ink and do the same to the guitar pick.  Put aside to dry and then heat set with an embossing heat gun.  Tip:  Be careful with the amount of heat used when heat setting the guitar pick because you don't want to risk melting it!

Hand draw the Union Flag onto the medium sized domino with Sharpie markers (http://www.sanford.com).  Embellish the domino with a royal crest image gleaned from a London newspaper.  Gently wet the edges of the newspaper cutting and then carefully tear around the image.  Apply Aleene's Fast Grab Glue to the back and place onto the domino.  Burnish gently to remove any air bubbles and tear away the portions that hang over the sides of the domino.  Put aside to dry.

Edge all the pieces with a broad point silver metallic DecoColor paint pen (http://www.uchida.com/) and also colour the sides of the dominoes.  Once dry seal the pieces with a light misting of Krylon Artists Workable Fixative and then a light misting or 2 of Krylon Glossy sealer.

Assemble the necklace as follows: Starting from the bottom, thread red and white seed beads onto a silver head pin.  Then add the small domino and a blue seed bead.  Form an eye loop with a pair of needle nose pliers and cut off the excess wire with wire cutters. Add a silver jump ring to the loop and attach to the point of the guitar pick.  Do the same to the medium sized domino and attach it to the wide edge of the guitar pick.  Add a jump ring to the top of the medium pendant and thread a length of red chenille fiber through it.  Add silver fold over connectors to the ends of the fiber and secure in place with pliers.  Attach each connector to a silver spring clasp with jump rings and you're done!
