Luna Lights Backgrounds by Linda Strawn

Regular technique:
1. Cut 8-1/2 x 11” black glossy cardstock into fourths. Lay 2 of the pieces on a piece of scrap paper. Using Luna lights paint from www.stampoasis.com, drop 3-4 colors of paint drops into center of 1st piece of cardstock, I like to use 1 metallic color such as gold, silver, or copper, and 2-3 contrasting colors. For the sample I used silver, copper, teal, purple, and blue. I use a total of 10-12 drops.

2. Cover this piece of glossy with another piece of the black glossy you have laid out on your scratch paper, glossy sides together, lightly but firmly smooth the backside of the cardstock with your fingers to move the paint towards the top of your paper. When the top 1/2 of the paper is covered pick up the top piece and rotate it bringing the bottom to the top. Again lightly press with your fingers to transfer paint to your cardstock. If there are a few areas that do not have paint on, lightly dab a bit on them and lay the top piece back on and smooth out again. When satisfied that the paint is where you want it quickly remove the top piece and lay it down onto the scratch paper paint side up.

3. Place a piece of glossy cardstock, glossy sides together on top of the 2 painted pieces and again lightly smooth with your fingertips. This will leave you with 4 pieces of background paper.

4. Cut a piece of handmade gold crinkle paper to desired size for your card, sample is 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 fold in half. Matt with the Luna lights background paper

5. Using black ink, stamp #F31076 ceremonial mask from uptown design co at www.uptownrubberstamps.com stamp onto a white piece of cardstock. Tear around this and ink edges with gold metallic ink.

6. Use mounting tape and mount this in the center top of card.

7. Print out the word AFRICA onto a piece of green grosgrain ribbon (see directions for printing on ribbon) Cut your ribbon 3” and add a glue dot to each end. Run one end thru a square jump ring and secure the end to the backside. Repeat for other side.

8. Cut a piece of gold metallic cardstock 4 x 1-1/2” cut 2 small pieces of beige grosgrain. Run each piece thru the square jump ring and secure ends on the back of the gold metallic piece. Cut a small piece of the handmade crinkle and glue to the center of gold metallic. See picture for the placement. When ribbon is secure, glue this piece to the bottom on card leaving about 1” from the bottom.

9. To embellish this card, cut a 1” piece of beaded trim and secure with double sided tape to top corner. Add a feather or two under the trim.

10. Add a med gold jump ring underneath the lip on the mask.

To print on ribbon:
1. Type up your message using any font that will give you desired length and width.

2. Print your message out using draft printing speed

3. Cut your ribbon the size desired plus a few inches extra on each end.

4. Using double sided tape runner temporary adhesive lay a strip over your message and beyond a few inches.

5. Lay your ribbon over the message, being sure to center it.

6. Use scotch tape secure ends of ribbon to paper at ends.

7. Set your printer saturation down a couple of notches.

8. Place paper your ribbon is on into printer and print using draft mode.

9. I like to do a whole page of ribbon at once, with different or the same sayings.

10. The ribbon should just lift right off your paper, if after you print your words are blurry or fuzzy set your ink saturation down a few more notches till you are happy with the results.

Shaving cream method:
1. On a cookie sheet spread a layer of shaving cream about 1-1/2 - 2” deep

2. On top of shaving cream add several drops of Luna lights paints.

3. Using a toothpick move inks by cutting thru with toothpick in several different directions. Make sure to not stir the mix or you will muddy it.

4. Cut several pieces of white matt cardstock (I do several sheets at one sitting so I have lots of background paper to chose from.)

5. Lay paper on top of shaving cream mix, press lightly into mix to paper makes contact all over the surface. Do not force it down into the mixture just make sure to make good contact.

6. Remove paper and use a pallet knife to scrape off excess shaving cream from your paper; this will reveal your pattern.

7. Continue to make paper till all the shaving cream is used. You can use the scraped off shaving cream for a more pastel look also.

8. Set aside to let dry and use for background paper.

For Double heart card:

1. Make up a background paper using shaving cream method; I used yellow, purple, light blue, and pink as well as gold metallic. Cut a piece of plum cardstock and fold into your card, matt with your background paper

2. On same plum cardstock as you used for your card, stamp heart #3 GM35-G onto this paper twice with embossing ink and sprinkle white embossing powder and emboss.

3. Stamp CREATE from Art impressions onto same cardstock and also emboss with white.

4. Cut out your 2 hearts, and cut out the word create about 4-1/2” x 1-1/2 “wide, centering the word create.

5. Adhere the create panel on the left side and using mounting tape secure the 2 hearts on the right side overlapping them a bit.

6. For embellishments add a silver cord around the card and thread on beads and tie a knot into the ends, see picture for beads I used.
