Iris CD Pin by Daylene Strickland

Prep:  Heat CD in microwave for 1-2 seconds (that is ALL) for crackle.  Remove backing with fingers.  (Use heat gun to reheat if needed to help loosen paper.  It will peel in large sections after reheating.)  Wipe down CD with rubbing alcohol to remove excess paper bits.

Draw shape on CD with permanent black marker, such as Sharpie.  Warm CD with heat tool and cut to desired shape.  Alcohol may be used to clean any marker from CD.

Stamp flower image (gg designs) using permanent ink (StazOn Royal Purple used).  Punch hole in CD if adding beads is desired.

Apply VersaMark to reverse side of CD.  Allow ink to set a minute or so and begin gently apply mica powders with brush in up and down dotting motion being careful not to wipe away the ink.  Fill in areas of flower with desired colors and completely cover CD piece.  (Perfect Pearls Lemon Sparkle, Berry Twist, Forever Violet, Forever Green, Turquoise, Perfect Sparkle were used.)   Dust off excess powder.  Melt clear UTEE in Hot Pot (Ranger) and add very tiny spoon (1/2 teaspoon) Flex (Ranger) to entire pot.  Allow to completely melt.  Dip entire CD in melted UTEE and remove to non-stick craft sheet.  Once cool, dip a second time.  Any places where tweezers have left a mark may be reheated with heat tool to re-clarify.  Add jump ring, beads and pin back if desired.

Note:  Junk CD’s will not work for this technique as the backing is not easily removed.  Commercial CD’s work best.  The results resemble a faux glass piece.  The technique for crackling the CD’s is not my own.
