Coasters by Karen Bourke

Choose 5 drinks coasters and punch, or drill, a hole in the top left corner of each. If they have a coating (plastic) then lightly sand them first and then cover with two coats of acrylic paint. Set aside to dry.

While the coasters are drying choose how you are going to decorate them. In this instance the image for the first coaster was stamped on a piece of photographic card which was swiped with an embossing pad and clear embossing powder sprinkled over. When you heat set the powder the photographic card bubbles and gives a lovely texture to the image. An arched door was cut out of card and the doors held back with brads. The wording was stamped on mica and attached to the front under the brads.

The second coaster was inked with an embossing pad and copper embossing powder heat set onto it. The wording was stamped onto fine ribbon and two glass slides were placed at an angle over the words after the corners were dipped in the copper embossing powder and heat set. The same words were stamped onto shrink plastic and shrunk down and a glass nugget was wrapped in copper wire and attached to the top left corner.

The third coaster was coloured using a direct to paper technique and the image stamped on some jigsaw pieces and also shrink plastic to which some beads were attached.

The fourth coaster has a distressed label cut to size and wording stamped on to it. One word has been picked out by a watch crystal.
Two bottle tops have images placed into them and instead of using liquid embossing on top of the faces watch crystals were used instead.

The last coaster has three images stamped onto card which is then torn and stuck to the coaster. A piece of string was coiled and stuck down with a bead in the centre. A coating of gloss glaze was brushed over the top and sprinkled with Pearl-Ex pigments.

Finally all the coasters were attached through the holes by a loose leaf metal binder ring and fibres and an old key attached to the ring.
