Papers and Cardstock Chat Class

9:06:35 PM Wendy K  Welcome to our Paper and Cardstock Class
9:06:42 PM Wendy K  First, lets dive into paper weights.
9:06:51 PM Wendy K  The weight and grade of paper you probably use in your copier/printer is 20lb bond.
9:07:07 PM Wendy K  Bond paper comes in a basis size of 17 x 22 (although you buy it already trimmed to a smaller size).
  9:07:43 PM Wendy K  500 sheets of 17 x 22 copier paper would weigh 20 pounds – hence the 20lb in the name. In cover/cardstocks if 500 sheets of 17 x 22 cardstock weighs 80 pounds – you get 80lb cardstock.
9:08:10 PM Wendy K  Text weights are fine in stamping - and work great for layering.
9:08:23 PM Wendy K  They also are a lot less expensive than the cover weights, when you can find them.
9:08:32 PM Wendy K  Does anyone have any questions about paper weights?
9:09:25 PM Nan Is the text weight 20#?
9:09:29 PM teh makes sense. this applies for all kinds of paper weights?
9:09:51 PM teh sorry, all kinds of paper types?
9:09:58 PM Wendy K  Text weights can vary... I've been everything from 20lb # to 70#
9:10:16 PM Wendy K  Yes, this goes for all weights of paper, cardstock, vellum, etc
9:10:53 PM Wendy K  the heavy the weight, the more sturdy the paper
9:11:04 PM Wendy K  heavier the weight... sorry for the typo
9:11:35 PM Wendy K  Translucent Vellums
9:11:43 PM Wendy K  These are very light in color and are transparent with a milky look. They come in tons of colors, including clear/white; columns, colors, printed and more.
9:12:04 PM Wendy K  The weights of vellum are much like cardstock – the higher number, the thicker the product. We recommend at least 24 lb for stamping – 48 lb is great for techniques like polished stone.
9:12:28 PM Wendy K  The vellum we carry is suitable for laser and inkjet printers. (It does take a minute or so to dry if using an inkjet printer.) For best results, use Glama Naturals vellum.
9:12:44 PM Wendy K  Things to do with it:
9:12:45 PM Marion logged on at 9:12:45 PM
9:12:55 PM Wendy K  Stamp on it using dye ink or pigment ink and them emboss.
9:13:01 PM Wendy K  Use it for direct to paper technique.
9:13:05 PM Wendy K  Layer over background paper.
9:13:14 PM Wendy K  Dry emboss with it.
9:13:26 PM Wendy K  Stipple embossing fluid onto vellum, then add ultra fine embossing powder in the color of your choice. Use as is, or sponge/brayer color over the top for a unique background.
9:14:17 PM Wendy K  To attach: 3M makes a vellum tape which works well.
9:14:37 PM Wendy K  Use brads, eyelets, etc.
9:15:00 PM Wendy K  Use colored staples and go around your whole vellum piece.
9:15:18 PM Wendy K  Don’t have any of the above? Try using double stick tape then attach a bow, button flat backed rhinestone, etc where the tape shows through.
9:16:14 PM Wendy K  ((in case I am going a little fast ...all of this information will be able in our chat log tomorrow))
9:16:16 PM Wendy K  Any questions about vellum?
9:17:11 PM Alison L when id do polished stone technique the vellum wrinkles is the heavier the weight the less it will wrinkle
9:17:47 PM Wendy K  yes... you need at least a 45lb for that... and I recommend glama naturals.
9:18:00 PM Wendy K  We don't have this in stock now, but have it on order. Should be here the 1st part of next week.
9:18:05 PM Nana K glama naturals? a type of vellum?
9:18:16 PM Wendy K  It is a brand of vellum
9:18:31 PM Nana K Ok, thanks.
9:18:43 PM Wendy K  Now, for a door prize question :)
9:19:25 PM Wendy K  What is one finish or type of vellum we carry?
  9:19:48 PM teh columns?
  9:19:56 PM Wendy K  That's it :)
9:20:20 PM teh Wendy, how do we know if you're out of stock on an item?
9:20:29 PM Wendy K  email me your name and mailing address and I'll send you a surprise pack of papers/cardstocks - *******************
9:20:47 PM Wendy K  on our website, it will list "Current Quantity In Stock"
  9:21:04 PM teh I can't find the #45 vellum
9:21:22 PM Wendy K  I am still doing inventory, so items starting in 999 hasn't been entered yet
9:21:45 PM Wendy K  we don't have the 45# vellum in stock, yet... so it isn't listed on the website. It will be up Monday... Tuesday at the latest.
  9:22:30 PM Nana K May I ask a question?
  9:22:33 PM Wendy K  Sure :)
9:23:14 PM Nana K When I read "quantity" and it says 5, and the paper is $.16 each -- does the quantity mean only 5 sheets or 5 packs?
9:24:13 PM Wendy K  if the price is listed as each, then the 5 would be number in stock
9:24:38 PM Wendy K  Next… on to cardstock basics
9:24:46 PM teh nite! I cant wait to read the log tomorrow!
  9:24:51 PM Wendy K  65lb Cardstock
9:25:00 PM Wendy K  This is the lightest of the Cover/Cardstocks. These fold easily; this is heaviest paper stock able to work well in copiers and most personal printers (some of the newer printers handle 80lb and heavier without a problem.
9:25:22 PM Wendy K  Great for: paper piecing, layering, stamping and regular card making. I prefer not to use this as a cardstock base (the actual folded card) because I feel it is too thin
9:25:33 PM Wendy K  Popular brands include: Astrobrights, Fraser Brights, Magna Carta and more.
  9:25:52 PM Wendy K  80lb Cover / Cardstock
9:26:07 PM Wendy K  Heavier than 65lb. Great for: paper piecing, layering, stamping and for using as a folded card. Use for die cutting, tearing, etc.
9:26:48 PM Wendy K  These come in many many brands.. way too many to list them
9:27:06 PM Wendy K  DOOR PRIZE QUESTION: What is one brand of 80lb cardstock that we carry?
  9:27:22 PM Alison L appleton
9:27:37 PM Wendy K  You got it :)
9:27:38 PM Nana K Classic linen
9:27:58 PM Wendy K  Alison, please email me your name and address to **********************
9:28:17 PM Wendy K  Before I go on, does any have any questions about what we have covered so far?
9:29:34 PM Wendy K  Ok.. on to Glossy Cardstock
9:29:47 PM Wendy K  Currently, the best type of glossy cardstock to use is CAST COATED. Let me explain a little about what cast coated means.
9:30:22 PM Wendy K  Simply put, un-coated paper has a heavy layer of wet clay coating applied to its surface, almost like frosting a cake (with a paper knife?).
9:30:40 PM Wendy K  The then newly coated paper is pressed against a super heated, highly polished chromium drum, where the drum's mirror-like image is then "cast" onto the newly coated paper. Hence, the term "cast coated."
9:31:07 PM Wendy K  Cast coated papers provide the highest gloss paper manufactured, with one other interesting difference from typical coated papers.
9:31:26 PM Wendy K  The surface of cast coated papers are very soft and absorbent when compared to other types of coated papers. The soft and absorbent surface provides for an extremely flexible paper offering opportunities to fold and score with a minimum of cracking.
9:31:49 PM Wendy K  The coated surface also allows for maximum ink hold out while allowing inks to dry (and bond) both on top of and within the surface coating
9:32:32 PM Wendy K  This is why it is very important that you purchase "cast coated" glossy cardstock... if it isn't listed on the package, ask before you buy. Some company make a plastic coated glossy and those just dont hold the ink as well.
9:32:49 PM Wendy K  -Weight of glossy… as with regular cardstock, the higher the number the heavy the cardstock. 10 pt is lighter than the 12pt. 10 pt is roughly equivalent to 65-10lb cardstock while 12pt is 80-90lb.
9:33:34 PM Wendy K  10 pt is fine if you will be laying your glossy onto another sheet of cardstock. (Which also will save you money)
9:33:58 PM Wendy K  the 12pt is great if cutting and folding it to use as a card.
9:34:31 PM Wendy K  It is really an issue of preference, though. I use the 10pt for everything...and, since it is less expensive ... it works out better in the long run.
9:34:49 PM Wendy K  Are there any questions about glossy cardstocks?
9:34:53 PM Alison L Do you know if Kromecoat is cast-coated?
9:35:21 PM Nana K Is King James glossy cast coated or plastic coated?
9:35:38 PM Marthy logged on at 9:35:38 PM
9:35:48 PM Wendy K  The newer Kromecoat is... the stuff manufactured within the last year or so. They used to make only plastic coated, but changed their processes.
9:35:56 PM Wendy K  King James is cast coated glossy
9:36:12 PM Nana K Good. I really like its weight too.
9:36:29 PM Wendy K  King James also came in 10pt and 12pt... however, it is no longer being made
9:36:45 PM Marthy has been logged out at 9:36:45 PM
9:36:51 PM Wendy K  For some reason the mill that made it decided to stop... don't know why
  9:36:56 PM Nana K Yes, I know. :-(
9:37:24 PM Wendy K  On to Matte Coated Cardstocks...
9:37:25 PM Nana K What do you have that is comparable?
9:37:34 PM Wendy K  We carry Bindakote
9:37:43 PM Nana K Ok, thanks
9:37:50 PM Wendy K  I prefer that to other brands I have tried... it seems to hold ink much better
9:38:05 PM Wendy K  and less cracking when you fold it
9:38:45 PM Wendy K  Matte coated is the one type of cardstock I get the most questions about...
9:38:53 PM Wendy K  You can use matte coated cardstocks in the same way as you do glossy. The only difference is that you will not have the glossy finish. I find using this cardstock gives a very professional appearance to your work. You can use this for your entire card (when folding) or use it for layering. We carry Appleton Matte Coated 80lb Cardstock.
9:39:22 PM Wendy K  It does not work well for watercolors, as it is coated..
9:39:39 PM Wendy K  but for markers - it is wonderful. Gives a very smooth appearance.
9:40:01 PM Wendy K  Colored pencils also look very good on this.
9:40:48 PM Wendy K  Any questions so far?
9:41:05 PM Nana K Can the Matte Coated take all kinds of inks then?
9:41:24 PM Nana K Can I use my alcohol inks on this c/s?
9:41:47 PM Wendy K  It's not will good with the pigment inks... just like glossy, they are difficult to get to dry
9:41:59 PM Wendy K  yes, you can use all dye and alcohol inks on it
  9:42:10 PM Nana K thanks
9:42:15 PM Wendy K  treat it as you would glossy cardstock... same principles.
9:43:04 PM Wendy K  There are a wide range of different finishes/types of cardstock. I’ll go over just a few that I am familiar with.
9:43:24 PM Wendy K  Matte and Vellum Finish: Your standard, plain cardstock. This is relatively absorbent to provide good ink penetration.
9:43:49 PM Wendy K  Don't confuse "vellum finish" with "translucent vellum" these are two totally differernt things.
9:44:13 PM Wendy K  Linen finish: embossed to have a surface resembling linen cloth.
9:44:34 PM Wendy K  Laid Finish: Laid paper is made by having a wire mesh pressed into the paper while wet. When dry, the impression remains.
9:44:52 PM Wendy K  Felt finish – Think of this as the texture of a school type notebook (remember the kind with the 3 paper brads in the center.) Feels rich to the touch.
9:45:41 PM Wendy K  My favorites are CURIOUS CARDSTOCKS (Including Curious Lightspeck, Curious Metallics and Curious Iridescents. These cardstocks range from 80-90lb and are acid-free. Great for just about anything and hold ink well.
9:46:20 PM Wendy K  Any questions about finishes?
9:47:27 PM Nan What is the difference between matte and vellum finishes?
9:47:58 PM Wendy K  Vellum finish is a little more smooth than plain matte
9:48:26 PM Wendy K  if you are in a local paper store "Matte finish" won't be listed on the paper package
9:48:34 PM Wendy K  whiel "vellum finish" or "vellum" will be listed
9:49:29 PM Wendy K  That is all the information I have :) Are there any questions about the different types of paper or cardstocks?
9:49:57 PM Nan You seemed to have covered everything. Thanks
9:50:00 PM Nana K Is it possible to purchase paper that is 17 X 22?
9:50:15 PM Nana K I am seeing more and more projects that call for this size/
9:50:27 PM Marion Thanks. Very informative
  9:50:32 PM Alison L Thanks.That was great.:)
9:50:34 PM Nan Staples have it.
9:50:46 PM Wendy K  You can get it ... most common is 11x17
9:50:58 PM Wendy K  the 17x22 are usually parent sized sheets
9:51:02 PM Nana K Do you carry it?
9:51:15 PM Wendy K  no, we don't carry it as it would be too hard to ship
9:51:22 PM Nana K Ok, thanks.

  9:52:10 PM Wendy K  **********
9:52:25 PM Wendy K  I LOVE linen cardstock.. I probably use that the most for my card bases
9:52:30 PM Wendy K  and layering.
9:52:37 PM Wendy K  gives such a rich feel to the card
9:53:01 PM Nana K Yes, and it definitely LOOKS rich too. The colors....what can I say? LOL
9:53:21 PM Wendy K  lol :) The cranberry is my favorite
9:53:37 PM Wendy K  and epic black... have to have the black cardstock!
9:53:47 PM Nana K Me too.
9:53:49 PM Nan Thank you, Wendy, for the class. It was very informative.
9:53:57 PM Nana K The dark green and the Navy are nice too.
9:54:13 PM Nan logged off at 9:54:13 PM
9:54:25 PM Wendy K  I went to a "paper university" class from one of the paper mills...
9:54:35 PM Wendy K  and this was a 2 day class...
9:54:37 PM Nana K I'll bet that was interesting, wasn't ikt?
9:54:42 PM Wendy K  it was hard to stay awake
9:54:50 PM Nana K LOL Oh, no.
9:55:26 PM Wendy K  most of it was interesting.... but after the first 8 hours, you really don't want to hear about how the extract pulp from certain types of trees and bleaching lol
9:55:51 PM Nana K No -- and I don't think I'd want to hear about it during the first 8 hours. ROFL
9:56:07 PM Nana K Someone gave me some of the columns c/s. Another nice one, I think
9:56:17 PM Wendy K  Yes, that is also one that I use a lot
9:56:35 PM Wendy K  I only carry things that I will use... probably not good for business, but that's the way it works
9:56:42 PM Nana K Don't you think that the quality of the cardstock can "make or break" a card?
9:56:48 PM Wendy K  if I don't like it for stamping or crafting, I won't carry it
  9:57:13 PM Nana K I can't disagree with that. I mean, I won't buy it if I think it's trashy
9:57:17 PM Wendy K  yes... I see a lot of really good work, but put onto 65lb or less cardstock.
9:57:30 PM Nana K I'm not one to buy anything less than 80 lb. weight.
9:57:43 PM Wendy K  they floppy-ness of it just doesn't work well with cards
9:57:52 PM Nana K I know that makes my cards thicker, but it just looks better.
9:57:57 PM Wendy K  I'll layer with the lesser weights, but not use for a card base
9:58:43 PM Nana K I use 110# for my cards. I love the vanilla or ivory (???) best.
9:59:27 PM Wendy K  I also use the text weights for layering... saves a lot of money, and for a layer - the thickness doesn't matter. However you do have to use a great adhesive like a Xyron machine for it
9:59:34 PM Wendy K  to be sure it doesn't peel or tear
9:59:45 PM Nana K Well, guess it's time for me to go. LOL I enjoyed tonight's class, Wendy. I've signed up for your group so I'll get info re upcoming classes.
10:00:10 PM krmet Thank you for the class. A lot of this is still sinking in. I am new to stamping.
10:00:45 PM Wendy K  It will all be up in the log tomorrow morning... so don't feel overwhelmed. You can always come and read through anything you a fuzzy on
10:00:46 PM Nana K Oh, krmet, you will love it, I promise. There's no limits to what you can do...keep your imagination going.
10:01:12 PM Wendy K  Thank you for coming! If you ever have any paper (or stamping) questions .. just let me know.
  10:02:50 PM Nana K G'nite all.
10:02:59 PM Wendy K  Have a great night, all :)
