Textured Altered Book Cover by Kathy Stoffel
1. Select a book to alter. Apply masking tape to the binding of the book
to protect it from the paste.
2. Using medium to heavy acrylic modeling (or molding) paste, take a
spatula and spread the paste liberally onto the book cover.

3. Tear off a piece of waxed paper and press it onto the paste. Add texture using your fingers to form ridges.
. . leave some areas with less texture for interest.

4. Remove the waxed paper after a couple of hours and let it dry overnight.

5. Using Shiva® Artist’s Paintstik® Oil Colors, scribble yellow ochre and
yellow citron onto the book cover. Rub the color using your fingers…the
warmth from your fingers will soften the oil-based paint so it will fill
in the valleys. Spread color over the entire background. If the ridges
hurt your fingers or you cannot get into the crevices, use a stiff brush
to move the color.
6. Scribble some sap green color onto the bottom and up one side…blend
this color into the yellow to give more dimension. Finish with a small
amount of deep color (Prussian blue) on the bottom and titanium white on
the top for contrast.

7. You can add varnish to protect the finish and add shine after the paint
dries (give it a couple of days).
8. Repeat for the opposite book cover.
9. Glue a piece of fabric or decorative paper to the book’s spine.
