Textured Altered Book Cover by Kathy Stoffel

1. Select a book to alter. Apply masking tape to the binding of the book to protect it from the paste.

2. Using medium to heavy acrylic modeling (or molding) paste, take a spatula and spread the paste liberally onto the book cover. Picture 1

3. Tear  off a piece  of waxed  paper  and press it  onto the  paste.  Add  texture using your   fingers to   form ridges. . . leave some areas   with less   texture for interest.  Picture 2

4. Remove the waxed paper after a couple of hours and let it dry overnight. Picture 3

5. Using Shiva® Artist’s Paintstik® Oil Colors, scribble yellow ochre and yellow citron onto the book cover. Rub the color using your fingers…the warmth from your fingers will soften the oil-based paint so it will fill in the valleys. Spread color over the entire background. If the ridges hurt your fingers or you cannot get into the crevices, use a stiff brush to move the color.

6. Scribble some sap green color onto the bottom and up one side…blend this color into the yellow to give more dimension. Finish with a small amount of deep color (Prussian blue) on the bottom and titanium white on the top for contrast. Picture 4

7. You can add varnish to protect the finish and add shine after the paint dries (give it a couple of days).

8. Repeat for the opposite book cover.

9. Glue a piece of fabric or decorative paper to the book’s spine. Picture 5
