Washi Paper Quilting is based
on the traditional Japanese doll making Technique called "kime-komi".
Japanese kimono fabric is used on the dolls, but paper quilting
incorporates Japanese washi paper instead. The only sewing involved is
very minimal and OPTIONAL. Sewing may be used to embellish the quilted
pieces.
 |
This technique is very easy and fun. The projects you make are only
limited to your imagination. Any shape or combination of shapes may be
used. Hanko Designs sells a Paper Quilting kit that comes with many of the
supplies needed and one kit makes multiple projects. The kit includes a
piece of chip board, 1/8” foam; washi paper, and 3 patterns.
However, the project can be done without a kit using chip board, washi
paper and some very thin cotton batting. Washi paper is key, though as it
has a bit of stretch allowing it to fit nicely over the pieces. |
 |
1) For this project I chose to cut a hexagon shape out of chip board using
a die-cut machine. Locating the center of the shape, draw lines to
separate it into 8 equal sections.
(Tip: If using scissors
to cut these lines, number the sections so they will fit evenly back into
place after covered with paper.) Trim sections with scissors. |
 |
2) Using white glue, adhere the chip board sections to the foam sheet.
Trim each section closely and do not allow foam to overlap
edges. |
 |
3) Position foam covered piece on back of a piece of washi paper and trim
allowing approximately 1/4" border around section to fold over edges.
(This photo shows the foam covered, chip board piece. Note that the
foam side is glued to the washi paper.)
|
 |
4) Place the foam side of section down on the back of the washi paper and
fold over edges of washi paper. Stretch the paper slightly to pull it taut
and use a bone folder to assist with creasing. Trim any excess and glue
the paper on the backside.

5) Assemble a card with coordinating papers. (Metallic gold paper is
Echizen Gold from Hanko Designs). Locate the center of card and mark with
a dot. This is a guide when adhering sections on card.
(This
photo also shows the back of two completed sections.) |
6) Adhere sections on card one at a time using the center point of the
card as guide for placement. Add a Mizuhiki petal knot to embellish the
center.
