One Stamp – Five Ways
by Karen Bourke

The theme for this Artists’ Corner is to take one stamp and use it to create totally different looks. We often get lazy and just tend to use a rubber stamp in the way we are most comfortable with and forget it can be used to create so many other effects. Hopefully the following projects will make you look at your rubber stamps differently! The dress stamp used in these projects is from the Evening Dress Collection – Flowers Plate JS215 from www.joannasheen.com. The word/phrase stamps used in these projects are also included on this plate.

Acetate – Stamped and Gold Leafed

Take a sheet of acetate and dust both sides with an anti-static bag. Stamp your image onto the acetate using purple Staz-On ink. (See Picture 1)
When dry turn the acetate over and, using a fine brush, paint size (or similar glue) onto the areas where you want to put your gold leaf. Leave to dry for approximately 15 minutes. Take a sheet of gold leaf and place over your image. Pat down gently and use a soft brush to remove the excess gold leaf. (See Picture 2)
Turn over to make sure you have covered all the areas you want – if not apply more size, let dry and reapply the gold leaf. (See Picture 3)
When complete cut to size and mount onto light purple cardstock using brads. Mount this in turn onto gold and dark purple cardstock and use foam pads to attach it to your main cardstock which has some patterned paper glued to the front.

Parchment – Heat and Dry Embossed

Take a sheet of parchment and dust with an anti-static bag. Stamp your image using an embossing pad and sprinkle with copper embossing powder. Heat set the image. (See Picture 1)
Turn over the parchment and lay on an embossing pad. Using a medium ball embossing tool dry emboss various areas of the dress. (See Picture 2)
Turn over to make sure you are happy with the highlighted areas. (See Picture 3)
Cut the image to size and mount onto white card using a small amount of adhesive behind an area of the dress that is copper embossed so it will not show through. Ink up the "Dancing in the Moonlight" phrase, stamp onto a separate piece of parchment, and copper emboss. Cut to size and mount onto a piece of white card using copper brads. Complete the card using copper embossed paper on the main square card, add some ribbon and a tassel and mount the parchment on top.

Stampbord and Canvas

Gather together some pieces of stampbord which will make up a 4 inch square. Turn the pieces over and use low tack tape to stick the pieces together in the square. Turn the square back over and use pieces of cut-n-dry foam to colour the top of the square. Distress inks in fired brick, tattered rose and dried marigold were used. Start with the lightest colour over the whole area and then use the darker colours and blend together. (See Picture 1)
Ink the stamp with black Staz-On and stamp onto your coloured square of stampbord making sure you press firmly. (See Picture 2)
When the ink is dry (leave to air-dry or use your heat gun) take a scraper tool and etch away some of the top layer to reveal the white area beneath. (See Picture 3)
Turn over the square and remove the low tack tape. Ink each piece of stampbord with embossing ink and sprinkle on UTEE powder. Heat set and repeat twice more to get a smooth glazed finish. Repeat this process with a 1-1/4" x 2-1/2" piece of stampbord using the phrase "I could have danced all night". Use a Krylon gold pen to finish off all the outside edges of the stampbord.

Take a 6" x 6" piece of canvas and colour it using pearlised acrylic paints. Set aside to dry. Assemble your stampbord pieces and glue onto the canvas.

Fabric

Take a piece of material that will show off the dress stamp nicely. In this case it is a piece of silk embroidered material. Take a deckle edged 6" square card and set to one side. Cut a piece of material approximately 6" square and mount onto Aslan film (double sided adhesive film). Trim the edges and mount onto the main cardstock. (See Picture 1)
Stamp your dress image twice onto a plain piece of the material using Staz-On ink. (See Picture 2)
Cut each image out roughly and mount onto the Aslan film. (See Picture 3)
Cut both images out carefully. The Aslan film will stop any fraying of the material. Using double sided tape stick the first image onto the main card. Take the second image and mould it so the skirt of the dress is rounded and has pleats. Mount this onto the first image using silicone glue or foam pads. Take some small flowers and glue onto the front of the dress and add some glitter glue to the centre of the flowers and add some detail to the dress. (See Picture 4)
Add an organza bow and gold tassel to complete the card.

Watercolour and Ribbon

Take some watercolour paper. Ink your stamp up with Adirondack inks (Lettuce, Stream and Denim) starting with the lightest colour. Spritz your stamp with a small amount of water and immediately stamp onto the watercolour paper. This will give you a softer image that looks as though it has been painted. (See Picture 1)
taple some co-ordinating coloured ribbons to the edge of the watercolour paper, mount onto pale green cardstock and then onto darker green cardstock. Tie a thin green ribbon around the bottom and add a small bow in the same ribbon to the top right of the image. (See Picture 2)
Mount this onto your main card which has a strip of patterned paper across two thirds of the card. Stamp the phrase "Dance like there’s nobody watching" on a small piece of watercolour paper and mount as for the main image. Stick a ribbon across the bottom of the main card and glue the stamped phrase to it. Cut out three small squares from the green cardstock, watercolour paper and patterned paper and mount. Attach a piece of ribbon to the top of one square and add eyelets to attach the three squares together with jump rings. (See Picture 3)
Attach to the top right hand side of the card.
