Media Chart by Kathy Stoffel

A Media Chart provides a sample of painting/marking media (e.g., inks, paints, markers) on a variety of papers commonly used in art projects.

1. Select a book or game board to use as the base for the Media Chart.

2. This Media Chart is made from the cover of a children’s book (approximately 12 X 20 inches with book open).

3. Remove the pages from the book. (See Picture 2)

Lightly sand the inside covers of the book.

4. Brush gesso on the inside cover of the book (See Picture 3)

and fill in any gap left after removing the pages by gluing in a piece of raffia. (See Picture 4)

5. Decide the layout of the paper and media that you want to use. This media chart has 8 papers in columns: mailing envelope, 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper, decorative paper, tan cardstock, vellum, pages from a book, mulberry paper, and tissue paper. This chart has 20 rows containing 19 samples of the following types of media: Liquitex Basic acrylic paint, Lumiere paint, Golden fluid acrylic paint, Golden glaze, Shiva Artist’s Paintstik, StāzOn ink, Color Box pigment ink, Color Box chalk ink, oil pastel, watercolor crayon, opaque calligraphy paint marker, Sharpie, china marker, Micron05 pen, Gelly Roll pen, and water color pencil.

6. Use deckle-edged ruler or scissors to cut strips of paper to fit the length of the chart.

7. Glue the papers to the inside cover of the book using matte medium or glue stick. (See Picture 5)

8. Mark 1-inch increments down both sides of the chart in pencil and connect these marks with a light pencil line across the width of the chart to guide placement of the media. These marks can be erased at the end.

9. Apply each medium across the width of the chart in a row, marking on each of the papers. (See Picture 6)

Save one row to identify the papers. (See Picture 7)

10. After the media dry, identify the name and color of each item. (See Picture 8)

11. Let the chart dry thoroughly. Seal with Microglaze.

12. Attach a hanger to the back of the chart.
