Resist
Etching on Glass by
Linda Strawn
We will be etching glass in this project and using embossing powder as a
resist. This makes a very inexpensive Halloween gift. I bought my glass
pumpkin for 99 cents at a craft store, look at the dollar stores also. So
let’s get started.
1: Protect your work surface with scrap paper and then assemble all you
supplies.
You will need the following
A small sponge brush
Fine line embossing powder
VersaMark pad
Heat gun
Glass etching cream, I used Armour new improved glass etching cream
Rough wash rag
Halloween rubberstamps (unmounted)
Masking tape
Glass cleaner
Cleaning towel
Resin bag
Glass pumpkin bowl

Ribbon and green wire
2: Clean your glass pumpkin with a good glass cleaner, it is important to
remove all dirt and oil and avoid touching the surface as much as
possible.
3: You will be working in sections, so start with the bottom of the
pumpkin. Turn upside down and cover bottom surface with resin powder from
tapping the bag gently over the bottom.
(See Picture 1)

4: Ink up unmounted pumpkin stamp with VersaMark and stamp firmly down on
the glass.
(See Picture 2)

5: Cover stamped image with embossing powder, any color will work. Brush
off extra, only the stamped image should be covered, so brush away any
spare flecks with a small paintbrush.
(See Picture 3)

6: Using heat gun emboss the image, when embossing on glass hold the tool
real close and be patient it takes a bit longer.
(See Picture 4)

7: Put on plastic gloves and using a sponge brush apply a heavy coating of
etching cream to the bottom staying in the circle on the bottom of glass,
if you have any splatter onto any other surface clean off immediately with
a cloth. Glass etching begins fast so keep other areas as clean as
possible. Cover this surface with a thick coat of etching cream, brushing
one way and then the other, and forward and backward. Be sure to cover
entire surface.
(See Picture 5)

8: Clean brush and set timer for at least 5 minutes, more is ok too but
not less.
9: After at least 5 minutes, take to the sink and wash area in warm water
and remove all etching cream.
10: Scrub embossing power off with a rough wash rag. You will see that the
embossed area has resisted the etching cream and the other areas are
frosted. Dry off and prepare to do the sides.
(See Picture 6)

11: Work 1/2 of the sides or 3 panels at one time. Repeat above
instructions to stamp and emboss pumpkins and sayings on panels of the
glass.
12: Before you add the etching cream cover the panels that will not be
etched with masking tape being sure to press down on the edges so etching
cream will not seep under.
13: Follow the etching directions above to do all panels. When done repeat
for the other side of the pumpkin.
(See Picture 7

and
(See Picture 8)

14: Tie a bow around stem and add 3 strips of green wire coiled around
your paintbrush handle to curl. Fill with your favorite candy and you have
a beautiful Halloween gift you made yourself. See finished pic
