Fans and Tassels by Nancy Thaut

The first fan is done by the method of Iris folding. Lisa Vollrath presented the Iris fan originally in 2004.

Iris folding is quite a simple technique using lightweight paper (no card stock) or you can use vellum without folding. The pattern for making the card can be found by clicking here. Make a 5” x 7” card using black card stock paper. Make 2 copies of the pattern, one for cutting design in the card stock and other to attach to the front of the card to layer your paper (The layer pattern needs to be larger than the fan [about 1”] as you need a place to temporary attach to card.) Cut card stock with either an exacta knife or scissors using the fan pattern. Use plumber’s tape or anything that doesn’t stick permanently to attach pattern to the front of the card with fold pattern showing to the inside front of the card. Select three lightweight paper colors. Cut paper into 3/4” strips. Fold over about 1/3. Notice the pattern shows A or B or C per each number? The same letter identifies each color. Lay 1st folded sheet on line A. Tape the paper with scotch tape at both the top and trim paper after determined the bottom of the card, and tape. Continue taping around the card until all 21 pieces have been cut and taped. Remove the pattern from the front of the card and you’ll see your beautiful fan. Cut fiber or cord and attach to the card and cover with a gold button.

Accordion Folded Fan Card with Tassels

Tassel
I used a skein of 6-strand embroidery floss and wrapped around a 1-1/4”x3” piece of cardboard 15 times and snip the floss at the bottom of the loops. (Don’t cut loops yet.) Using either floss or gold thread, thread 18” through a crewel needle & pass between the floss & cardboard working the floss up to the edge of the cardboard and tie. Holding the top part of the tassel together, slide the wrapped floss off the cardboard. Holding the loose end of the floss and the tassel in one hand, about 1/4” down from the top, wrap the tassel 8 to 10 times and run the floss-threaded needle back down thru the wrapped section, pulling the floss snug. Cut the bottom loops & trim the bottom end of the tassel, clipping any loose ends.

Card
Using a 5-1/2” x 8-1/2” piece of light green card stock, fold in half and stamp fans (Stampette) randomly with VersaMark ink. Glue yellow cream 1 1/2”x 3 1/2” paper in upper right and 1 1/2” square in the lower left corner of the card. Take a 2”x6” piece of origami paper and fold it 1/4” facing the right side, then fold it facing the wrong side and continue until you’ve used up the paper. Secure bottom with glue or tape & wind tassel cord around bottom leaving the tassels hanging. Attach fan to card and embellishment to the square.

Paddle Fan Card

Using a 5-1/2” x 8-1/2” piece of white card stock, fold in half and stamp randomly various Asian stamps using 3 colors of ink. (I used ColorBox dark peony, wisteria and black and stamps by Hero Arts, Stampettes and misc unknowns). Cutting a 3 1/4” by 3” square of origami paper, I rounded the top and corners and tapered to 2 3/4” at the bottom with rounded edges. Cut a gold circle and cut off one third. Draw lines with embossing pen & emboss with gold. Glue onto fan. Glue stick for handle and mount fan on card with foam mounting tape.
