“Chalk Popping with Holiday Flair” by Stephanie Loomis

Purchase a printable version of this project

Chalk Popping is a quick and easy way to make an impressive card. The basic technique is simple: stamp image onto glossy cardstock with VersaMark ink and use a cotton ball to brush chalk over it. The image appears as if by magic. Here are two ways to take this simple technique to the next level.

Poinsettia Card

1. Using a VersaMark ink pad, stamp “Poinsettia” (The Angel Company) onto glossy white cardstock (I prefer Kromekote.)

2. Brush red brick chalk from I Kan Dee Pebbles (Earth Tones) over petals. I love these chalks because they are smooth and the applicator and poms are conveniently located in the container.

3. Brush olive green chalk over leaves.

4. Highlight center with gold chalk.

5. Cut to 4" x 3-1/4"

6. Edge with Hint of Pesto VersaMagic Chalk ink (Tsukineko.)

7. Use a 1/4" flat paintbrush to color petals and leaves with VersaMagic Chalk inks: Hint of Pesto, Tea Leaves, Red Brick, and Red Magic.

8. Tap a small amount of Dimensional Magic (Plaid) onto flower center and sprinkle with gold microbeads (Penny Wise Arts.)

9. Outline flower petals and leaves with Dimensional Magic. Let dry.

10. Use antiqued brass brads to attach poinsettia to striped holiday paper (Leaving Prints.)

11. Attach assemblage to an A2 note card.

12. Sign your art.

Peace Dove

1. Stamp Dove image (Acey Ducey) with VersaMark (Tsukineko) ink on black glossy cardstock (Marco’s Papers)

2. Use a fan brush to tap Antique Copper and Silver Pearl Ex (Jacquard) over the image---do not rub or swirl; the image will smear. Using a large cotton ball, gently tap the Pearl Ex into the ink until the image pops out. Gently blow excess Pearl Ex away.

3. Cut the image out and adhere to a 5-1/2" x 4-1/4" piece of gold cardstock as shown.

4. Attach a green/gold shimmery ribbon (Craft Narrows-Michael’s) to lower portion of card.

5. Use letter stickers (Basic Grey) to spell “Peace.”

6. Adhere to A2 note card.

7. Sign your art.
