Tea Stained Domino Technique by Jill-Marie

1. Drill any holes you want in the domino. Lay the dominoes in one layer into a glass bowl and cover with bleach. Leave for at least 4 hours to really eat through the shiny finish. If you do not do this step, the tea will not soak into the domino.

2. Rinse dominos completely under warm running water. Make sure the slick feel is gone and the bleach is completely rinsed off.

3. Boil enough water in a pan to cover dominoes in one layer only. When water boils add four to five tea bags per 1 cup of water. The stronger the tea the more color you will have with the finished dominos. Leave tea bags in the water through out the staining process. Experiment with different teas for different colors!

4. Turn burner on low and add the dominoes to the water for 30 minutes. I found that the bottom of the domino, the one facing down against the pan bottom, stained the darkest. Check water often to make sure it does not go dry.

5. If the color is still not as dark as you want, add new tea bags to same water, reboil and turn on low for 30 minutes again.

6. Option: Lay the dominos on a plate and sprinkle some coffee grinds on top if you want a real vintage look. Leave to dry. I found that sometimes I get some speckles from the coffee and other times for some reason I didn’t.

7. Rinse and dry. Let these dry for a while before stamping.

8. Stamp image of your choice. Heat set to dry.

9. This image can be colored in with color pencils, chalks. I found that the lightness of these colors contribute to the image better than bold colors. Think antique, old and used.

10. Spray with a couple light coats of Krylon Matte Finish. Be careful as StazOn can bleed with Krylon products if sprayed on too heavily. Just to add a little protection.
