10 Uses for Liquid Appliqué by Heather Taylor

Purchase a printable version of this project

1. Basic Liquid Appliqué Technique
Write and draw with tube on gloss cardstock. (See Picture 1)
Let dry. Heat whichever part of the design you want to apply color to, masking the rest off with a Teflon craft sheet. (See Picture 2)
Apply color (dye inks work well) with sponge, wiping off smooth, unheated portions of liquid appliqué. (See Picture 3)
Finally, heat until puffy. (See Picture 4)

2. Liquid Appliqué Polka Dot Resist
(See Picture 1)
On a quarter sheet of white gloss, use a metal ruler to lay out a series of dots at 1/4" intervals in a diamond-shaped repeating pattern.
(See Picture 2)
You don't have to mark each dot with a pencil--just go ahead and put a dot of Liquid Appliqué down at every 1/4" mark, offsetting at each row. Let dry a couple of hours. (See Picture 3)

When done, brayer dye ink(s) in your color(s) of choice across the whole page, then ensure complete coverage with a make-up sponge. (See Picture 4)
Heat with a heat gun, and watch those little dots puff up! (See Picture 5)

3. Liquid Appliqué & Brilliance Reinkers
(See Picture 1)
Scribble some liquid appliqué onto white glossy cardstock and dot with Brilliance reinkers (I used Pearlescent Coral, Yellow, and Beige in this sample). (See Picture 2)
Roll smooth with a brayer, twisting the brayer here and there to blend inks. (See Picture 3)
Run to the sink and wash off your brayer! (Actually, you can also just spritz it with water and wipe it off with a paper towel =) Press stamp into wet ink/liquid appliqué mix so that it removes some of the paint. Wipe off and repeat. (See Picture 4)
Clean your stamp immediately. Heat paper with heat gun. You now have a lovely textured background that almost looks like a gesso’ed wall... (See Picture 5)

4. Stamping with Liquid Appliqué
(See Picture 1)
Squirt a little liquid appliqué onto Reynolds Freezer Wrap (slippery side) or waxed paper, then use the brayer to spread it around in a thin layer. Brayer your stamp, then stamp onto cardstock. Clean your brayer and stamp while you let the stamped image dry, then heat with the heat gun. Subtle, but works!     (See Picture 2)

5. Liquid Appliqué and Alcohol Inks
Squirt a little liquid appliqué onto Reynolds Freezer Wrap (slippery side) or waxed paper, then drop a couple of drops each of Piñata Magenta and Ranger Butterscotch around. Squirt a little blending liquid over the whole thing. Take a gloved finger and gently push around the liquid appliqué & alcohol inks until you have a nice pattern. (See Picture 1)
Heat carefully with the heat tool. You now have a textured and brilliantly colored background. (See Picture 1)

6. Faux Parchment Technique
Stamp your image on copy paper in very black ink (I used Versacraft); dry. Cut a piece of vellum the right size for your main image. Using repositionable tape, tape the vellum over the stamped image. Use the liquid appliqué in white straight from the bottle following the outlines of your stamped image. Let dry overnight. (Optional--not a parchment then turn over and color the back of the vellum with watercolor markers or inks or acrylic paints.) Heat the liquid appliqué side of the vellum to achieve the final look.

7. Liquid Appliqué Clouds
Mix one squirt Magenta, 2 squirts Blue, and 1 squirt White in a small shallow dish. Blend with the end of a wooden skewer. Use a makeup sponge to apply liquid appliqué over a cut-out of clouds, brushing away from you at various strengths and with various amounts on the sponge. (See Picture 1)
Let dry, then heat. (See Picture 2)

8. Liquid Appliqué & Saran Wrap
(See Picture 1)
Mix one squirt Teal, 2 squirts Yellow, and 1 squirt White in a small shallow dish. Blend with the end of a wooden skewer. Brayer over matte coated cardstock, then scrunch up a piece of clear plastic wrap over top. (See Picture 2)
Wait a few minutes, then peel off--it should leave some nice stripes of white as well as some interesting striations within the colored areas. Heat with heat gun. (See Picture 3)

9. Liquid Appliqué, Faux Leather Technique
Mix 2 squirts Brown, 1/2 squirt Magenta, 1/2 squirt Red, and 1 squirt White. Dab onto glossy paper with makeup sponge, then use a brayer to spread it around. Use the sponge to finish off the white spots. (See Picture)
Let dry overnight, and then heat with gun.

10. Painting with Liquid Appliqué
Just what it sounds like. Stamp and emboss image, then take a little liquid appliqué on your paintbrush and go over the areas to be colored. (See Picture )
Let dry, then heat with a heat gun. Do not overheat so that the embossing powder runs into the liquid appliqué. (See Picture 2)
