“Ka Hae Hawaii commemorating July 31st – Hawaiian Flag Day – Momentous Tag by Paula Snaith-Morris

As my project for the Stamper’s Mall ‘Artists Corner’ fell upon July 31st I decided to do something different and research the significance of this particular day in history.  I discovered that it is a momentous day in Hawaiian history, because in 1990 the Governor of Hawaii, John D. Waihee III, proclaimed July 31 to be Ka Hae Hawai‘i which means Hawaiian Flag Day.  It has been celebrated each year since then.

Ka Hae Hawaii is the only state flag in the United States to have been flown under so many various forms of government and is the only one that features the Union Jack, the flag of the United Kingdom which is where I live.

Directions:

Step 1:  Using decorative chalks, colour a standard shipping tag then edge using a liquid gold marker pen (DecoColor opaque – broadline.)

Step 2:  Cut out 3 corresponding colours of cardstock and mount to original tag, and edge the last tag with the liquid gold marker pen

.

Step 3:  Handwrite the text stating the significance of July 31st with a black sharpie pen onto the shipping tag.

Step 4:  Colour a super-sized / jumbo domino in the Hawaiian flag design using red & blue sharpie pens, outline the edge in a black sharpie pen.  The Union Jack flag is cut from a strip of ribbon and mounted to domino using double sided tape.   Next you can adhere the domino to the chalked card using Aleen’s Tacky Glue.

Step 5:  Spell out the words “Ka Hae Hawaii” and July 31 using mini peel off gold sticker lettering (local craft store.)

Step 6:  Embellish the tag with seashells and flower beads, adhering in place with Aleen’s Tacky glue.

Step 7:  Embellish a key chain / key ring beach sandal with the word Hawaii using the same peel off gold letters and attach to the tag along with coordinating colour fibre.
